The Langkawi Archipelago is home to 99 scenic islands.兰卡威群岛有99座风景优美的岛屿。

The main island, also known as Langkawi, is a tropical paradise and home to just 95,000 islanders. lt sets itself apart from many other island destinations because of its natural assets of plants, animals, waterfalls, beaches, forests, islands, reefs and rock formations. Only a small part of the island is settled and, in most places, there is always a sense of being surrounded by nature with few buildings rising above the height of the coconut trees that line the beachfront.

While many visitors are content to enjoy all that the island's luxurious resorts have to offer, others travel here to take an adventurous walk on the wild side. With only three of the 99 islands in the archipelago settled, there's always an island to escape to.

Langkawi isn't a typical tourist island but more a natural paradise that incorporates luxurious tourist facilities. Travel here to enjoy its many fi ne resorts, superb restaurants, duty-free beverages and pampering spas but take some time to enjoy Langkawi naturally.

Wetland Wonderland

Langkawi's most popular tourist activity is to visit the mangrove forests lining the northern coastline of the main island to learn from informed nature guides about how these plants protect coastlines from erosion while being a valuable habitat for many animals. Mangrove forests were once wastelands best suited to fi lling in and levelling off but now they are recognised as a valuable natural asset. For example, the mangrove ecosystem is important to the fi shing industry as it is a habitat for many fi sh, crabs and prawns that ultimately get served in the island's restaurants.

Visitors can tour the mangroves from small covered boats that depart from Tanjung Rhu or the Sungai Kisap Mangrove Forest Reserve. ln addition to seeing several species of eagles and kites, tourists may observe several other types of birds and get a glimpse of monitor lizards and snakes that live in mangroves. Visitors enjoy the fact that they are on the water and in the fresh air for the whole time.

lt was Langkawi's natural assets that enabled parts of the island to be designated as a UNESCO World Geopark in 2007. Langkawi's rocks are considered some of the region's oldest dating back 550 million years and the Geopark not only protects the geology but also the plants and animals that thrive there.

Many parts of the island have limestone bedrock which results in the distinctive karst topography typical of northern Malaysia and neighbouring Thailand. Caves, suspended lakes and cliffs are features of this landscape and one of the best locations to admire the scenery is to go island hopping to Dayang Bunting lsland where a suspended freshwater lake provides a cool place to swim in crystal clear waters.

lsland hopping to other islands is possible and there is always an island to escape to for swimming or relaxing on beaches with few other tourists. Hire a car and explore the island and discover that it is the slow pace of island life that makes Langkawi so appealing.

Langkawi by Bike

lt is possible to join a nature tour that incorporates bike riding around some less-crowded parts of the island. Tours last about four hours and also take in cultural attractions such as a fi shing village and local market.

Padang Matsirat is Langkawi's second largest settlement and its local market is especially active on Sunday afternoon and early evening. Known as a pasar malam or night market, Sunday is especially popular with tourists while at other times of the week, the locals shop here for much of their fresh produce.

Kuala Teriang is a small fi shing village off the beaten track and rarely visited by tourists. A narrow stream here fl ows into the Andaman Sea and its mangrovelined banks are home to a small fl eet of fi shing boats which provide the islanders with fresh fi sh.

Cyclists can set their own pace based upon their cycling ability and interests while nature guides pass on valuable information about the environment.

One of the best places on the island to learn more about the importance of rice to the islanders is to visit Laman Padi Langkawi (Rice Garden and Museum) located along the popular tourist Pantai Cenang (Cenang Beach) strip.

While adventures in nature beckon, many tourists don't move beyond the confi nes of their selfcontained resort. Most resorts have beach frontages with few rising above the coconut trees and while budget travellers head to Cenang Beach, those with cash to splash fi nd Pantai Tengah, Telaga Harbour, Burau Bay, Tanjung Rhu and Datai Bay more to their liking.

lnternational hotel brands like Four Seasons, Westin, St Regis and Starwood Luxury Collection operate resorts on the island while locally-owned resorts such as Berjaya, Frangipani, Pelangi, The Danna, Tanjung Rhu, Casa del Mar and Resorts Worlds are just as appealing. Many resorts with spas and independent wellness sanctuaries are also located on the island.

The neighbouring and jointly-owned boutique resorts of Bon Ton and Temple Tree are uniquely Malaysian with the accommodation of museum quality, antique houses having been sourced from around Malaysia and relocated to Langkawi to be fi tted out with quirky interiors that combine period furniture with funky contemporary touches. These houses can be also viewed from the open-sided garden restaurant located in Bon Ton which is renowned for its combination of West meets spice cuisine, paired with premium global wines. A stilt house overlooking the wetlands in front of Bon Ton is also a perfect location for birdwatchers.

All visitors to Langkawi can join in activities including golf (three courses including one designed by Ernie Els), horse riding along jungle trails, parasailing, yachting including popular sunset cruises around adjoining islands, zip lining through the forest canopy, snorkelling and diving, boat trips to islands in Southern Thailand and, duty free shopping.

Cenang Beach is the focus for Langkawi tourism and its shops, fun bars and numerous local and international restaurants ensure it remains popular with visitors.
