economic growth alone is not enough to bring about a holistic development of society. Accompanying economic development, social problems such as poverty, unemployment and inequality stubbornly persist along with environmental degradation.

Based on this realization, the world has reached a consensus in pursuing a coordinated effort towards greener development models measured by more appropriate indicators such as the Measure of Domestic Progress (MDP), Green Gross Domestic Product (GGDP), Human Development Index (HDI), and Gross National Happiness (GNH).

After decades of rapid economic progress, China has now slowed its pace for more focused growth centered on qualitative factors guided by five major development concepts – innovation, coordination, green development, opening-up and sharing.

An interconnected and mutually dependent ensemble, the five concepts aim at unleashing a new force driving growth, reducing inequality, increasing harmony between humans and nature, enhancing interconnected growth, as well as promoting social equality and justice. Highlighting the development direction of Chinas 13th Five-Year Plan period (2016-2020) and the decades thereafter, these five concepts emphasize that the nation is ushering in a new era of development in a more comprehensive, balanced, and sustainable way.
