“老西门”区域，从单一的居住及商业功能，推演出更多的城市文化复合功能。对于老西门及周边社群的居民休闲生活产生积极的意义，带有强烈的公共分享意识及文化传播属性，成为常德老城区新城市文化的诠释者与朗读者。

我们试图在老西门区域，赋予每个建造以恰当的意义与归属，每个空间、转折与细节、材料、色彩，都可以用诗情画意来诠释与标识，形成蒙太奇一般的视觉连续剧。500千尺的画卷，角色、场景、寓意与层次，全在画幅之中，任由读取，互为关联，绝不雷同。

传统与生活的延续，改写及新的内容注入，构筑出老西门的场所核心，历史和未来在这里发生深具意义的连接。城市文脉在老西门的城市更新中得以持续衍生演绎，生生不息。

We may reason with more complex functions of urban culture from single residential and commercial functions of the "Old West Gate" area.They have positive signi fi cance for the residents of the Old West Gate and neighbouring communities in their leisure life. With a strong sense of public sharing and cultural communication attributes, they become an interpreter and reader of the new urban culture in the old town of Changde.

We are trying to endow each construction of the Old West Gate area with a proper meaning and attribution. Each space, including the turns and details, materials and colours, may be explained and identi fi ed as poetic. They develop into montage-like visual drama. The 166km picture scroll, including the roles, scenes, implications and levels, are all placed in the frame. They are free for reading, interrelated, but never identical.

The extension and rewriting of tradition and life, and injection of new contents, have built up the core of Old West Gate. History and future are linked here with great signi fi cance. The cultural context of the city is derived from and deduced with endless succession in the urban renewal of Old West Gate.
