With the rise of the sharing economy and China抯 supporting for new energy vehicles, the car-sharing market in China has boomed since 2015. Unlike the traditional car rental industry, online car-sharing allows customers to rent vehicles for a short period of time and to rent or return vehicles at any time, without dealing with car rental firms.

However, the safety of car-sharing faces question. Bypassing car rental firms puts effective management of vehicles and the qualification of drivers in doubt. How would the government act in such a regulatory dilemma? Would it regulate the new market like it did with the online car-hailing industry, or would it offer policy support in the form of new energy subsidies? Industry insiders are divided on this question.
