When Narcissus①narcissus [nɑr'sɪsəs] n. 水仙died the pool of his pleasure changed from a cup of sweet waters into a cup of salt tears, and the Oreads came weeping through the woodland②woodland 英 ['wʊdlənd] 美 ['wʊdlənd] n. 林地;森林adj. 林地的;居住在森林中的that they might sing to the pool and give it comfort.
And when they saw that the pool had changed from a cup of sweet waters into a cup of salt tears, they loosened③loosen 英 ['luːs(ə)n] 美 ['lusn] vt. 放松;松开vi. 放松;松开the green tresses④tress 英 [tres] 美 [trɛs] n. 一绺头发;发辫;卷发;枝条vt. 把(头发)梳理成绺of their hair and cried to the pool and said, 'We do not wonder that you should mourn⑤mourn 英 [mɔːn] 美 [mɔrn] v. 哀悼;忧伤;服丧in this manner⑥manner 英 ['mænə] 美 ['mænɚ] n. 方式;习惯;种类;规矩;风俗for Narcissus, so beautiful was he."
"But was Narcissus beautiful?" said the pool.
"Who should know that better than you?" answered the Oreads. "Us did he ever pass by, but you he sought for⑦seek for 寻找;追求;探索, and would lie on your banks and look down at you, and in the mirror of your waters he would mirror⑧mirror 英 ['mɪrə] 美 ['mɪrɚ] n. 镜子;真实的写照;榜样vt. 反射;反映his own beauty."
And the pool answered, "But I loved Narcissus because, as he lay on my banks and looked down at me, in the mirror of his eyes I saw ever my own beauty mirrored."
当水仙少年的芳魂溺毙在池中,原本甜美的池水失色成一潭咸涩泪液,林中仙子来到林边哭泣,这样他们就可以用歌声来慰藉水仙少年陨落在湖中的灵魂。
当他们发现湖水由甘芳可口变得苦涩难咽如一潭泪,他们松开了束发的绿枝在湖边泣道:“我们非常明白您灵魂深处为水仙少年的凋零而哀恸,他是那么美丽。”
“水仙少年很美吗?”池疑惑道。
“还能有人比您更了解他的美吗?”林中仙子回答道,“他对我们熟视无睹,而每当他行经您的身旁,总要驻足停留,憩息在您身畔,望着您,从您的水镜中他能够欣赏自己的美。”
然而池答道:“我爱水仙少年是因为,当他躺在我的身畔望着我,从他明镜般的眼眸中,可以看到我自己的美。”
