since it was put forward three years ago by chinese President Xi Jinping, the Belt and Road initiative has become an important platform for countries along the routes to share development opportunities. According to Wang Yiwei, Professor of international relations at Renmin university of china, the initiative will act as a good supplement and improvement to the existing mechanism of international governance, while injecting new vitality into the worlds economic recovery and long-term development. his ideas follow:

THE Belt and Road Initiative is committed to building an open, balanced, and inclusive framework for mutually beneficial cooperation. Through its promotion and implementation, China, together with countries along the routes, is building a new platform for global economic governance.

The Belt and Road Initiative is set to become the most spectacular economic corridor in the world, connecting in various ways more than 100 countries and international organizations. China has already signed cooperation agreements with more than 30 countries along the routes, most of which are actively looking to coordinate their development strategies with Chinas initiative, including Russia-led Eurasian Economic Union, Kazakhstans new economic policy of Bright Road, the EUs Investment Plan, also known as the Juncker Plan and the UKs Northern Powerhouse. International organizations such as the United Nations also hold positive attitude toward the initiative, and investment and financial platforms such as the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank and the Silk Road Fund are promoting financial cooperation along the routes.

The main force driving the Belt and Road Initiative is the contradiction between the growing demand for international public goods and the backward supply capacity. The initiative aims at raising the level of trade and investment and promoting international production capability and equipment manufacturing cooperation through deepening transnational interconnections. By increasing effective supply, the initiative will boost demand and help realize global growth.

China is now moving from the low end to the middle end of the global value chain in most industries, and to high end in some industries. This indicates that China is able to not only cooperate with developed countries to jointly develop markets in Asia and Africa, but also share successful experience with developing countries so as to promote regional win-win cooperation. All parties have intensified their efforts to build a community of shared interests, responsibility and destiny.

It is important to note that the Belt and Road Initiative is supplementary to the existing international governance mechanism. On the basis of constructive interaction with international mechanisms like G20, the initiative has promoted sustainable and healthy global economic growth. International mechanisms like G20 will be conducive to turn the initiative into a global advocacy and action program. G20s strategy to achieve strong, sustainable, balanced and inclusive growth will also be reflected in the initiatives implementation process.

As the worlds second largest economy, China can play a facilitating role in coordinating the needs and demands of developing countries, emerging economies and developed countries. This, in turn, will further highlight Chinas role in driving the global economy.

Chinas opening-up drive is not a oneman show. Rather, it is an invitation open to all. China does not seek to establish a sphere of influence, but rather to support the common development of all countries. In the future, the Belt and Road Initiative will focus on building mutually beneficial cooperation networks and platforms in various areas, making a greater contribution to improving global governance and benefiting people along the routes.
