踵事增华：评《剑桥中国上古史：从文明的起源到前221年》

由英国学者鲁唯一（Michael Loewe）与美国汉学家夏含夷（Edward L.Shaughnessy）等人所编著的《剑桥中国上古史：从文明的起源到公元前221年》（The Cambridge History of Ancient China:From the Origins of Civilization to 221 B.C.）已经于1999年由英国剑桥大学出版社出版发行。尽管迄今为止该书中译本仍未面世而不免使人有遗珠之憾，但该书不仅反映了西方数代汉学家所秉持的迥异的研究方法与理论素养而具有相当的学术性与可读性。而且该书的分析视角和学术思路也值得在中国先秦史研究中加以镜鉴，从而开拓并深入中国的先秦史研究的内容与视界。

自1978年6月由美国学人费正清（John K. Fairbank）与英国汉学家崔瑞德（Denis Twitchett）所合编的上卷本《剑桥中国晚清史 1800-1911年》（The Cambridge History of Ancient China:Late Ch'ing 1800-1911, PartⅠ1)由英国剑桥大学出版社出版发行以来，截止到2015年3月，该社已经陆续出版发行了上卷本《剑桥中国隋唐史 589-906年》（The Cambridge History of Ancient China:Sui and T'ang China 589-906, PartⅠ2)、下卷本《剑桥中国晚清史 1800-1911年》（The Cambridge History of Ancient China:Late Ch'ing 1800-1911, PartⅡ3)、上卷本《剑桥中华民国史 1912-1949年》（The Cambridge History of Ancient China:Republic China 1912-1949, PartⅠ4)、下卷本《剑桥中华民国史 1912-1949年》（The Cambridge History of Ancient China:Republic China 1912-1949, PartⅡ5)、《剑桥中国秦汉史 公元前221年-公元220年》（The Cambridge History of Ancient China:The Ch'in and Han Empires 221B.C.-A. 一、章节安排与篇幅结构

《剑桥中国上古史：从文明的起源到公元前221年》一书的作者除剑桥大学的鲁唯一与芝加哥大学的夏含夷外还有同时供职于哈佛大学与台湾“中央研究院”的华人学者张光直、华盛顿大学的威廉·博尔茨（William G.Boltz）、普林斯顿大学的罗伯特·贝格利（Robert Bagley）、伯克利加利福尼亚大学的大卫·奈特利（David N.Keigbtley）、牛津默顿学院的杰西卡·罗森（Jessica Rawson）、洛杉矶加州大学的罗泰（Lothar Von Falkenhausen）、同时供职于匹兹堡大学和台湾“中央研究院”的华人学者许倬云、剑桥大学鲁伊斯（Mark Edward Lewis）、芝加哥大学的华人学者巫鸿、斯坦福大学的倪德维（David Shepherd Nivison）、亚利桑那大学的夏德安（Donald Harper）、哈佛大学的狄宇宙（Nicola Di Cosmo）等人。全书除导论外分为14章：（1）历史时代前夕的中国16；（2）语言和文字17；（3）商代考古18；（4）商代：中国第一历史朝代19；（5）西周史20；（6）西周考古21；（7）青铜时代的衰微：物质文化和社会发展，公元前770—公元前481年22；（8）春秋时代23；（9）战国：政治史24；（10）战国时代的艺术与建筑25；（11）古典哲学家的著作26；（12）战国：自然哲学和神秘思想27；（13）前帝国中国的北方边疆28；（14）留给帝国的遗产29。

表面上看，从该书的章节安排而言，文化史占6章、政治史占5章、考古学3章而稍显安排失当。事实上，该书内容翔实而不仅仅是对史料的简单汇编，全书恰好地将传世文献资料和考古文物资料

互为补充，基本上对中国先秦时代的主要领域和研究动态做了必要交代。如在第二章之语言文字中，该章执笔者威廉·博尔茨在将中国上古时期的语音做了分类汇总后又运用娴熟的语言学理论对早期的印欧语系和澳亚语系之不同传播方向对古代汉语辞汇中所产生的影响进行了分析而在该章之文字部分的表述中得出了汉字自成体系而非古代北非、西亚地区传入形成之观点。又如罗伯特·贝格利在第三章的商代考古部分中不仅对中国河南安阳、偃师、郑州等地的商代考古资料加以恰当地比较分析而且也对迥异于中原地区的四川广汉三星堆、江西新干大洋洲等地的考古资料进行了考量评述并提出了商代文化多元之理论，使重新审视传世文献工作变得重要且必要。从而把史实叙述与专题研讨两者相互结合，视角广阔、叙事手法多样，政治、文化、宗教信息在以时间为纲、专题为目的编纂体系中均有不同程度的体现与表述而反映了各学人的笔力与功底。不仅是对20世纪末的海外中国先秦史研究成果进行了基本梳理与重要总结，而且也是各学人彼此分工合作，精研学术的有力体现。

二、历史分期和史料运用

没有分期，便没有历史。在《剑桥中国上古史：从文明的起源到公元前221年》一书中，鲁唯一等人将漫长的史前时代与秦汉以前的文明时期加以融会贯通而架构形成整体之中国上古史年代体系，即把整个中国上古史以时间为序分为史前、商、西周与春秋及战国等不同时代并杂糅文化与政治等内容而写入各专家所负责的不同章节中，间接反映了历史发展的渐变性与连续性。此外，该书还以审慎的态度对待古今纪年差异。如该书在导论中便指出：“时间在古代中国曾是一个普遍受到关注的概念：一个新王朝的首要任务便是更改历法；孔子之《论语》开篇即敦促读者及时学习；大部分的历史记载提供了纪年，即便是其日期不总是像现代史家那样完整。然而，时间观是不同的，在古代中国迥异于我们今天倡导所做出的初步描述。”30从而将治史责任与灵活修史做了兼顾。再者，该书还运用各种方法对不同史料中所反映出的年代抵牾进行考订。例如大卫·奈特利在所执笔的第四章《商代：中国第一历史朝代》中综合利用青铜铭文、天文资料、古典记载、历法讯息等手段，以专门以一节的篇幅论述了绝对年代、时间与历法等涉及历史分期的重要概念与内容，形成有别于中国内地所通行的商代年表体系，为学界进一步探讨相关年代分期提供了新的空间以及讨论的价值。

历史研究往往离不开对事实的判断。《剑桥中国上古史：从文明的起源到公元前221年》一书从整体上呈现了对史料的批判与怀疑性考量的特点。鲁唯一与夏含夷在该书的导论部分中即以处理而非简单罗列的态度对传世文献进行梳理与总结。他们写到：“两百年前，当胡安·冈萨雷斯·德·门多萨使用西方语言完成了首部完整的中国史著作《中华大帝国史》时，他所依靠的事实是由朱熹所创作的一部改述与二手作品《通鉴纲目》的简单复述。”31表现了对史料形成过程的极大关注，即重视史料形成的文化背景。此外，该节中还运用了较大篇幅介绍并积极评价了以顾颉刚为代表的古史辨派的主张与成就，反映了实证是研究的基础，对史料的辨析是保证实证是否有效的基本前提。再者，该书的作者们还对中国上古史上的某些经典记载提出质疑。例如，在张光直所撰写的第一章《历史时代前夕的中国》中，作者专门安排了《对夏代的质疑》的一节，从古史传说、研究回眸、考古证据等诸多维度对夏代是否存世发起挑战，尽管该论断迄今仍然充满争议而未获得学界普遍公认，但张光直在此将史料出现与其产生环境进行综合分析的方法仍对当前的中国上古史研究工作的开展与进步大有裨益。

三、研究方法与学术思路

毫无疑问，历史研究需要从事实判断与方法运用两个方面着力。《剑桥中国上古史：从文明的起源到公元前221年》一书导论中在简单回顾了《剑桥秦汉史》的编纂目的和历史后便指出：“他们（编纂者）觉得有必要开始他们所涵括的第一帝国所忽略的早期发展。在注意到由考古发现所带来的转变以后，他们写道：“新信息的大量出现改变了我们对历史的看法，且新证据和传统记录并未获得普遍接受。尽管多次试图计划和编纂卷帙或囊括总结我们对早期中国之认识现状，迄今为止它已是不可能完成的。”32从而既指出了伴随考古所发现的大量新资料而推动了中国商周史研究发展之现况而使修编一部专门反映西方对华该阶段研究情况之著作的必要性，又恰好地将历史分期与考古资料两者有机结合而把西方学界对中国上古史的最新认识与研究方法尽可能展现出来。从整体而言，全书将考古资料大量运用而体现治史之活力与相当内涵。如杰西卡·罗森在所撰写的《西周考古》一章通过结合考古资料指出，早期周人相去商人甚远而在青铜器铸造上广受其影响而有所进步发展，商周鼎革完成后周人之青铜艺术伴随统治与交往扩大而渐趋多元变化而反映了周力量之变化轨迹，为一窥周之文明外幅状况提供重要参考。此外，杰西卡·罗森还在该章中适时提出了“礼制革命”（Ritual Revolution）这一概念，试图以文明的发展及其变化作为解释历史发展的基本线索而反映了该时期人类所获得成果情况并对这一过程进行体现。表现了西周的兴衰变化并结合考古资料凸显西周青铜器之变化历程，以礼器数量的上升情况强调了西周中期以后伴随承平日久而使周人逐渐由重武力向好礼乐变化而由盛转衰之基本事实。从而恰好地将各彼此看似孤立的历史现象加以联系，正确的评价并认识了该时期周文明成果与代价之间的关系。此外，该书中还广泛运用比较史学方法而兼顾了历史发展的横向与纵向关系。例如许倬云在所撰写的《春秋时代》一章中把西周征兵国人与古希腊城邦公民兵制进行比较，从中倡导相对中立的价值尺度，无疑有助于全球普适历史话语系统与人类整体历史的建立与书写。又如鲁唯一在所执笔的该书末章《留给帝国的遗产》中对公元前256年至公元前221年中国政局、宗教礼制、文艺等状况进行了必要地回顾与总结而作为该书的终篇，反映人类历史发展的纵向变化发展历程，从而恰好与剑桥大学出版社1986年所出版发行的《剑桥中国秦汉史 公元前221年-公元220年》相互衔接。

四、余论

总体而言，《剑桥中国上古史：从文明的起源到公元前221年》一书自1999年由英国剑桥大学出版社出版发行后即凭借其有序而富于层次的章节安排、合理而翔实的篇幅结构、整体而多元的历史分期、审慎而细致的史料运用、多样而变化的研究方法以及缜密而连续的学术思路而受到国内外学界的广泛关注与好评。毋庸置疑，该书也存在着一定值得商榷与改善之处，如该书较多侧重展现某些历史人物对重大历史事件的推动作用具有了一定程度上的英雄史观倾向而对于中国文明起源及中国在世界人类文明体系中所具有的地位与作用等相关现象或史实却未加以进行深入分析探讨。另外，古代世界各文明之间疏离而有限的联系与交往等要素无疑在中国上古史占有重要地位，然而该书中的作者们却将上述内容付之阙如。相当问题如夏朝存实之辨等都有待作进一步深化挖掘拓展。但是，这些书中所存在的令人遗憾的问题是可以让人理解与接受的，正如20世纪英国著名历史学家杰弗里·巴勒克拉夫（Geoffrey Barraclough）在其代表作《当代史学主要趋势》（Main Trends in History）中所言：“从长远的观点来看，历史学家将要依据他在兄弟学科的合作中以及在利用有关过去的知识为构筑将来方面所作的贡献大小来接受评判，而历史学则将与之同时接受评判。”33

British scholar Michael Loewe and American Sinologist Edward L.Shaughnessy, who compiled The Cambridge History of ancient China:From the origins of civilization to 221 B.C.has been in 1999 by the Cambridge University Press published. Although so far the book version has not yet available and unavoidable make a person with some regret, however the book not only reflects the different generations of Western scholars uphold the theory and method in the study of literacy has considerable academic and readability. And the analysis of the book perspective and academic ideas are worth studying in the History prior to the Qin Dynasty of the use of mirror, so as to develop and deeper the study of the History prior to the Qin Dynasty content and horizon.
