1Chinese mobile company successfullypenetrating Myanmar market

October 6, 2016 (Xinhua) — China's Huawei is successfully penetrating Myanmar's mobile market, as it recently made partnership with KMD,Myanmar's foremost IT distribution company, as a new distributor for its products and solutions business. The partnership will affirm Huawei's strategic commitment to Myanmar as a key market, according to the Chinese company. Myanmar, with a rapidly growing information and communication technology (ICT) sector in recent years, is one of the most emerging markets for Huawei in Southeast Asia. The country has a mobile phone penetration rate of nearly 90 percent. Huawei enjoys the highest brand power in Myanmar for its ability to boost sales or gain market share, according to brand research “Spotlight on Myanmar,”surveyed by Britain-based WPP and U.S.-based Millward Brown companies.

2Experts: Capital outflow bearable

October 8, 2016 (China Daily) — China's foreign exchange reserve shrank for the third consecutive month in September, but the capital outflow pressure is still within reasonable range, economists said. The reserve, the world's largest, stood at US$ 3.17 trillion in September,down by US$ 18.79 billion from August, according to data from the central bank on Friday. Xie Yaxuan, chief economist at China Merchants Securities Co., said that China is able to cope with external uncertainties. Xie added that the yuan has become more volatile after the central bank adopted a more market-oriented central parity rate system in August last year. Xie said the yuan's recent inclusion in the IMF's SDR would not have a major impact on the two-way capital flows.

3Vietnam to continue import of electricity from China, Laos

October 10, 2016 (Xinhua) — Vietnam will continue to import two percent of its electricity demand from China and Laos in the coming years, according to an official of Vietnam Electricity (EVN). Vietnam's total output of produced and imported electricity is forecasted to reach 184 billion KWH in 2016, higher than that of 164 billion KWH in 2015, the Saigon Economic Times reported Monday, the head of EVN's Production Engineering Nguyen Hai Ha said. Currently,the country is importing electricity that accounts for 3.1 percent of its demand from China and Laos, said Ha. The country is running out of hydropower sources so it will focus on developing coal-fired thermal power. The proportion of thermal power will rise to 49 percent by 2020 and 55 percent by 2025, said the official.

4Jack Ma eyes Thai E-commerce, E-payment,tourism

October 11, 2016 (Bangkok Post) — Alibaba Group founder and executive chairman Jack Ma is eyeing Thailand's E-commerce and E-payment businesses and offered to help screen Chinese visitors, Deputy Prime Minister Somkid Jatusripitak said on Tuesday. Mr. Jack Ma shared his views at a meeting with Mr. Somkid at Government House Tuesday. He wanted to take part in developing digital businesses in Thailand through the government as he had done in China and other countries, Mr. Somkid said. He eyed SMEs,which make up more than 90% of Thai operators,planning to provide them with chances to export their products through a jointly developed platform. Alibaba would train Thai business people and SMEs on E-commerce. He will also introduce E-commerce course together with the Thai government and local schools to enable Thai students to develop their startups in the future.

5Philippine president tovisit China

October 12, 2016 (Xinhua) — Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte will pay a state visit to China from October 18 to 21, at the invitation of his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping, said Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lu Kang on Wednesday. During the trip, Xi and Duterte will discuss improving bilateral ties,deepening cooperation and international and regional issues of common concern. Chinese Premier Li Keqiang and top legislator Zhang Dejiang will also meet Duterte, Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said at a daily press briefing. China hopes the visit will help the two nations strengthen political trust, deepen cooperation, continue friendship, properly handle disputes, and promote bilateral relations back to the track of sound and stable development, Geng said. He added that a good China-Philippines relationship is a common desire of the two nations.

6China aims to boost private investment with better financial services

October 12, 2016 (Reuters) — China hopes to boost private investment by improving financial services for small enterprises, its powerful state planner said in a document on Wednesday. Private investment has dropped to record lows and grew only 2.1 percent in the first eight months of the year. Nearly half of the 26 policy measures issued by the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) to boost private investment aim at improving financial services. They include encouraging policy and development banks to provide credit support for qualified small- and microfirms, and setting up investment funds in key areas to boost support for companies still in the initial growing stage. To ease financing pressures for small- and micro-firms, China will set up a national financing guarantee fund and push for full coverage by provincial credit re-guarantee institutions, the planner said.

7Chinese president sends message ofcondolences over passing of Thai King

October 13, 2016 (Xinhua) — Chinese President Xi Jinping Thursday sent a message of condolences to Queen Sirikit of Thailand over the passing of King Bhumibol Adulyadej. In the name of the Chinese people and himself,Xi expressed deep condolences over the passing of King Bhumibol and extended his sincere sympathy to other members of the Thai Royal Family and the Thai people. Xi said that His Majesty King Bhumibol was the guide of the national development of Thailand and a promoter of China-Thailand friendship. Such a good relationship between the two countries today was directly linked with the great importance and personal efforts made by King Bhumibol himself, said Xi. Xi added that, with the king's personal care and promotion, as well as the common efforts by the two countries, the Chinese-Thai friendship has borne many fruits. Xi said the passing of the king is a great loss for the peoples of Thailand and China and that he will live in the hearts of the two peoples forever.

8Xi: China backs stability and growthin Cambodia

October 13, 2016 (China Daily) — China is prepared to expand its imports from Cambodia and enlarge trade, President Xi Jinping said on Wednesday, ahead of his state visit to the Southeast Asian country. The president's remarks came as companies from the two countries signed eight trade deals valued at US$ 62 million on Tuesday in Phnom Penh. China will firmly support Cambodia in maintaining domestic stability and speeding up economic development, Xi said. Xi will make state visits to Cambodia and Bangladesh on Thursday and Friday, and will then fly to Goa, India, to attend the Eighth BRICS Summit over the weekend. During his stay, Xi is scheduled to meet with the king, have talks with Prime Minister Hun Sen and witness the signing of deals to boost cooperation in areas such as trade, investment and tourism.
