West 8,working together with MRIO arquitectos, designed the master plan for the reclaimed riverbanks and the new urban area above the tunnels of the M30 highway in Madrid Arganzuela Park and the Salon de Pinos are connected by two slow traffic bridges, the Puentes Cascara.
In contrary to usually technical and pragmatic pedestrian infrastructural bridges, they create a place where the river is really experienced. They are designed as a massive concrete dome with a rough texture. The bridges have the scale of park elements and not of the infrastructure.More than one hundred cables resembling whale baleens wearing the slim steel deck.
The fine detailing becomes visible when entering the bridge. The ceilings have a mosaic of the Spanish artist Daniel Canogar. In the edge of the ceiling, lighting is included which illuminates the artwork and the deck by reflection.
Comments
FANG Musheng:The bridge designed by West 8 seems to be far more than just an "infrastructure",but a presentation of some wise thought. At the first glance, the two bridges feature modern gallery bridges.Incorporating the function of a bridge into a functional building ,the gallery bridge offers a convenient access across both banks,as well as a comfortable place to pause inside to enjoy the scenery. The concrete shell dome and the bridge deck combined with the steel cables connected thereof forms a water building featuring unique temperament and abstract and concrete forms. The two bridges remind me of the Sydney Opera House set up on the water's edge, through neither can rival the building in beauty.
LIU Chen:"When you watch the scenery from the bridge, the sightseer watches you from the balcony." The imagery and philosophy contained in these simple, straightforward verses are reflected here in an alternative way; the correlation between "seeing" and "being seen" becomes subtler:while the balcony view remains singular, the bridge view is doubled.Looking out the balcony, one could hardly imagine what fantastic scenery is hidden beneath the rough concrete dome of the bridge. When the night falls, the dome is turned into a fairy-like heaven with its mosaic ceiling blinking like clusters of stars.Compared to its dreamy otherworldliness, the pompous riverbank promenade seems too dull and tasteless to merit a comment.
