Academician Guodong Cheng, the Chief-Editor of Sciences in Cold and Arid Regions, was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award of International Permafrost Association (IPA) in Evora, Portugal on 19 June 2014. The IPA awarded Professor Cheng to recognize his outstanding contributions in the field of frozen soil science and engineering research during the past one-half century.

Professor Antoni G. Lewkowicz, President of the IPA, gave very high remarks to Professor Cheng's research. His research fields included the periglacial processes, mountain permafrost and formation mechanisms of ground ice, and particularly permafrost engineering.

Professor Cheng's research provided the theoretical support for the design and construction of Qinghai-Xizang (Tibet) Railway. He put forward a hypothesis about the repeated segregation mechanism of ground ice, and he published more than 200 papers on many international technical journals.

Professor Cheng also dedicated to the talent cultivation. Professor Lewkowicz said that Cheng is an important person for leading China to the international top position in the field of frozen soil science and engineering.

It is reported that, up to date, the IPA Lifetime Achievement Award was only awarded to three distinguished geocryologists, respectively Professors John Ross Mackay (2010), Nikolai N. Romanovskii (2012) and Guodong Cheng (2014).
