This year, the term “Internet Plus” appeared in Chinas government work report, symbolizing its formal inclusion in the countrys top design as part of the important strategy for national economic and social development. However, for the many who may not yet be familiar with the phrase, an illustration with interpretation is in order.
The Report on the Work of the Government 2015 declares,“We will develop the ‘Internet Plus action plan to integrate the mobile internet, cloud computing, big data, and the Internet of Things with modern manufacturing.”
Dawn of “Internet+”
Pony Ma, executive director, chairman and CEO of Tencent Holdings Ltd., first presented the idea on November 6, 2013, at Fudan University in Shanghai.
What would it mean for traditional industries? It can enhance capabilities or external resource and environment, which can upgrade business.
During the annual session of the National Peoples Congress in 2015, Ma proposed that China“should sustainably use the ‘Internet Plus as a driver to encourage industrial innovation, promote crossover fusion, benefit peoples livelihood, and accelerate Chinas sustainable development as well as its transformation and upgrading, economically and socially.”
Significance of “Internet+”
The invention of steam engine launched the First Industrial Revolution.
The discovery and utilization of electricity brought the Second Industrial Revolution.
The development of the internet set off the Third Industrial Revolution.
Each industrial revolution has drastically upgraded the efficiency of industry with a new productive tool.
Currently, of Chinas 649 million internet users, 557 million, or 85.8 percent, regularly access it on their mobile phones. The worlds mobile phone netizens account for 58 percent of netizens on the planet.
China leads the world in the development of mobile internet.

Governance
E-governance faces problems such as information isolated islands and low usage ratio which can be solved by the next generation of IT, such as mobile internet and deepening big data, so as to establish an open, transparent, and service-oriented government as the final approach for governmental administrative modernization.
By the end of 2014, governments at all levels opened approximately 20,000 public accounts on WeChat for various social services.
The WeChat traffic service in Wuhan, capital of Hubei Province, for instance, can handle penalty services in one minute, saving a combined 1.4 million hours for drivers and police officers yearly.
Livelihood
“Smart livelihood” promoted by the mobile internet has made it more convenient for people to enjoy public services, optimize the distribution of public resources, and improve social efficiency through mobile phones.
Today, 910,000 citizens in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, have accessed city services in 17 sectors such as medical treatment, traffic administration, transportation, administration concerning residents and residency, exit and entry, payment, education, and housing provident fund, all through WeChat. In addition, Shenzhen and Foshan cities, both in Guangdong, have also been dubbed “WeChat smart cities,” following Wuhan and Shanghai.
Transportation
Matching taxi software between customers and drivers has made things more convenient for both sides, particularly for limiting fatigued driving and protecting the environment.
Moreover, smart taxi services have increased employment in the industry by 12.1 percent.
Since the introduction of specialized mobile taxi services, 96.5 percent of drivers have increased their incomes, 39.5 percent of them by at least 30 percent.
Education
Online education has helped correct imbalanced distribution of educational resources, allowing everyone a wider range of choices at lower costs.
Tencent has already joined hands with more than 5,000 educational institutions to offer primary school, university, vocational, and IT classes.
Every week, more than 70,000 people receive such online training in over 30,000 courses.
Medical Treatment
The integration of the internet and medical industry can help solve such problems as long waits to register and see a doctor, as well as providing more convenient payment options.
Today, some 100 hospitals across the country provide WeChat medical services for complete flow schemes and more than 1,200 hospitals provide WeChat registration, benefiting over 3 million patients and saving them 6 million hours.
In November 2014, Guangzhou opened a public account on WeChat, Guangzhou Public Health, which covers 60 hospitals in the city.
Finance
Internet finance offers financial services for medium, small and micro-sized enterprises, working-class professionals, freelancers, and migrant workers.
January 2015 brought the opening of “WeBank,” the first internet bank in China.
Media
The fusion of the internet and media marks a groundbreaking change of communication channels, creating networked media and inspiring WeChat public accounts. The development will create a brand-new way for traditional media to interact with users.
“Shake It Off,” a WeChat function to celebrate Spring Festival Gala 2015, distributed electronic hongbao, or “red envelopes,”worth 500 million yuan, inspiring users from 185 countries to shake their phones 11 billion times collectively.
Automobiles
The merger of the internet and cars, the most common means of transportation, will bring qualitative change to travel.
According to professional estimation, by 2020, 75 percent of the cars on the planet will be equipped with internet hardware facilities.
