Dear Liz,
My stay in Thailand has certainly been the experience of my life.
Life is busy and exciting. Bangkok is just like any other big city with a population of ten million and heavy traffic. Im very lucky because my host family is in a nice quiet area outside the city. There are Mr. and Mrs. Phairat, their son Sanan, who is eighteen, the daughter Chinda, who is sixteen, and Grandpa and Grandma.
I go to an international school with Sanan and Chinda. The school teaches about seventy percent in English, and thirty percent in Thai. Ive learned some spoken language, but Thai writing is very difficult. The cooking lesson is my favorite. Im learning all about Thai food and culture. People dont use chopsticks here, but spoons and forks. When I come back, Im going to cook you a real Thai meal.
Last weekend, we visited some temples. We also drove to Pattaya beach near Bangkok. I thought it was great, but Sanan and Chinda say that next month theyre taking me to Phuket Island, where the beaches are even more beautiful. The month after next, were going to travel to Mr. Phairats hometown in the north of Thailand. The Phairats own land there, and they have two elephants. Im going to ride those elephants and even wash them. Sanan and Chinda say its really fun.
Im amazed by everything in this country, especially by the elephants. Elephants are an important part of Thai culture and way of life. They have been a traditional symbol of Thailand for many years in times of war and peace. In the seventh century, a Thai king trained twenty thousand elephants for battle.
I will write and tell you all about my Thai boxing lessons next time.
Love,
Mandy

I bought a jasmine plant for my office. When I bought it, I was told it would bloom (开花) and the sweet smell would fill my office. I had the plant for two months, and every day I looked at it, but there werent any flowers or pleasant smell. I was unhappy, so I gave the plant to my friend Linda.
One day, another friend Mary called and invited me to her office. When I walked in, her jasmine flowers surprised me. I reached out to touch the flowers. Mary cut some and gave them to me. I couldnt help smelling them. Surrounded by the sweet smell of only a handful of these flowers, I suddenly understood something.
Mary bought her plant the same time I did. It took a year for her jasmine to bloom. I was so impatient for mine to bloom; regretfully, I gave it away.
In a way my life is like the jasmine plant. I need to be patient and let things happen.
Last Sunday Linda told me that she was going abroad the next week. Before she left, she returned the plant to me. This time I am going to wait. I have learned that when we want something in our life, we have to be patient. I am slowly learning to have that patience to wait for my jasmine to bloom.

Two pandas were shipped from China to Canada on March 25, 2013. The pandas received a warm welcome to the North America from Canadas Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Chinese ambassador (大使) Zhang Junsai. The pandas will spend five years at the Toronto Zoo, and then spend another five years at the Calgary Zoo.
This is the first time in 20 years that pandas have been sent to Canadian zoo. “I want to offer my sincere thanks to the government of China for sharing these two pandas, symbolizing peace and friendship, with all Canadians,” said Prime Minister Harper.
The pandas are named Er Shun and Da Mao. Er Shun, a five-year-old female, came from the Chongqing Zoo, in southwest China. Da Mao, a four-year-old male, traveled from Chengdu. The panda passengers were given plenty of snacks throughout the flight. Each panda received more than 200 pounds of bamboo and 100 pounds of apples.
The number of pandas is decreasing and now there are only 1,600 pandas left in the wild. And this is partly due to the loss of their primary food source, bamboo. According to a recent study, warming temperatures are causing a shortage of bamboo in at least one region of China where pandas live.
The climate in Er Shun and Da Maos new home in Canada isnt perfect for growing bamboo. Twice a week, the Memphis Zoo, in Tennessee, will ship about 700 pounds of the green plant up north to the Toronto Zoo. While the pandas are far from China, zoo keepers ________.
