Enids wedding (婚礼) dress arrived at five oclock in the evening just seventeen hours before her marriage!
“I must try it on, Mother!” she cried, as she ran upstairs.
Three minutes later, Enids cries brought her mother in. The dress was much too big for her. It was baggy (宽松下垂的) in the front, and the neckline (领口) looked all wrong. Enid was in tears.
“Take it back to the dressmakers,” Mrs. Bale said. “She must alter it tonight. Hurry now. Take it off and go.”
The dressmakers shop was closed. “CLOSED FOR ONE WEEKS HOLIDAY,” said a notice on the door. Fresh tears rose to Enids eyes. She ran home again to her mother.
“This is unlucky,” Mrs. Bale said. “But what are we going to do? Shall I ask Mrs. Peters to help? She was a dressmaker once. Im sure she could alter it for you.”
Mrs. Peters was brought in and began to work. She could see what was wrong. She had to take in a lot of material at the front, and that was a big job. Then she altered the neckline. The marathon in my town usually takes place in summer every year. My job was to follow the runners in an ambulance in case any of them needed medical care.
“We are supposed to stay behind the last runner, so drive slowly,” I said to the driver, Doug, as we began to move forwards.
As they began to pace themselves (控制自己的步速), the front runners started to disappear. It was then that my eyes were drawn to the woman in blue silk running shorts and a white T-shirt.
“Doug, look!” We knew we were already watching our “last runner”. Her legs were so disabled and bent that it seemed impossible for her to be able to walk properly, let alone (更不用说) a marathon.
Doug and I watched in silence as she slowly moved forwards. We didnt say a thing. We moved forward a little bit, then stop and wait for her to gain some distance, then wed slowly move forward a little bit more. As I watched her struggling (挣扎) to put one foot in front of the other, I found myself hurt and urging her forwards. I wanted her to stop, and at the same time, I hoped that she wouldnt.
Finally, she was the only runner in sight. Tears ran down my face as I watched her with fear, amazement and ever respect as she pushed forward with determination through the finish line.
I do not know the womans name, but that day she became a part of my life—a part I often depend on. For her, it wasnt about beating the other runners or winning a prize. It was about finishing what she had set out to do, no matter what. When I think things are too difficult or too time-consuming (费时的), or I get those “I-just-cant-do-it”, I think of the last runner. Then I realize how easy the task before me really is.

A. she hoped to draw peoples attention
B. she wanted to challenge herself
C. she wanted to beat the other runners
D. she wanted to make other people happy
( )68. The writer learnt from the woman that _______.
A. life is beautiful no matter what happens
B. we should never spend too much time doing one thing
C. we should face difficulties bravely and overcome them
D. disabled people can also do great things
( )69. The writer felt that _______ when he watched the woman running in the race.
A. the woman should have given up the race
B. it was not necessary for the woman to take part in the race
