第三部分 阅读理解(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

Scientists used to explore in the surface of the ocean. Now they are exploring below the surface. They want to know about ocean water and the plant and animal life deep in the ocean.

In1934 the scientist William Beebe dived 3,000 feet below the surface in a hollow (中空的) steel ball. In 1935 August Piccard dived 10,330 feet. In 1960 his son Jean dived to a depth of 35, 800 feet.

All these early dives were deep. But the divers could not stay down for a long time. They had to come back up to the surface after a few seconds. Scientists need to stay down longer to study life below surface. Gradually they succeeded. Cousteau, a Frenchman, was able to keep men down to a depth of 36 feet for one month and to a depth of 90 feet for a week.

Now scientists are developing even better equipment. With this new equipment, men can stay below the surface for days or even weeks. In 1962 Cousteau set up a research station 35 feet below the surface. Then, in 1964, he set up another station on the ocean floor of the Red Sea. This was the first undersea station to operate without help from the surface.

Many countries are now studying undersea living. The former Soviet Union has an undersea laboratory in the Crimean Sea .The United States has a laboratory 50 feet down on the ocean floor off the Virgin Island. In1970 five men lived there for two weeks. Then a team of five women scientists stayed in the laboratory. Next came other teams of men. All were there to explore the ocean depth and to make plans for the use of its resources. Scientists hope to find enough mineral vegetable, and animal wealth there to provide food for the entire world.

51. Why are scientists exploring below the surface of the ocean?

A. Because they want to look for monsters deep in the ocean.

B. Because they want to know about the seabed deep in the ocean.

C. Because they want to learn about the plant and animal life deep in the ocean.

D. Because they want to stay down longer to study life of the plant below the surface.

52. Who made the deepest dive?

A. William Beebe. B. August Piccard. C. Jean Piccard. D. Cousteau.

53. Who set up the first undersea station to operate without help from the surface?

A. A Frenchman. B. An American. C. A Russian. D. A German.

54. What can be inferred from the passage?

A. Scientists try to explore new life in the ocean.

B. Scientists will make use of ocean resources in the future.

C. Scientists have found the secret of sea life in the ocean.

D. Scientists are skeptical about the truth of monsters existence.

55. Which of the following statements is TRUE?

A. The early divers could not stay down for a long time.

B. Scientists try to uncover the unexplained mysteries of the ocean.

C. Setting up the undersea laboratories is to exploit ocean resources.

D. Up to now only five women scientists have stayed in the undersea laboratory.

第四部分 写作(共三节,满分50分)

第一节 阅读表达(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

阅读下面短文,并按照题目要求用英语回答问题。

Maggie was very glad that James was not a frequent visitor to the house.

In fact James came once a year, unexpectedly, around eight oclock in the evening, and he stayed for six hours of close discussion with his brother. His arrival was a signal to the children that their bedtime would be delayed. Not that he ever spoke to them or played with them. He took no notice of them, as if he was unable to see children, at least until the time came for him to go. Instead, after his first greeting and a careless kiss, James took no notice of Maggie either, except to add, “Youll be getting on with the supper, Maggie.” Such was his regard for her.

Maggie paid him back in her own way. She kept the children up, the four of them, to keep her company, she said, but of course they sang and made a noise and broke the endless sound of Jamess voice. Very late, they dropped off to sleep in their chairs. Then, when James was about to go, Maggie woke them up and so more or less forced him to part with four shillings before he left. That gave her some satisfaction, for James, though rich, was mean. He always went home by the last train, just after two oclock.

Maggies children secretly stared at their uncle. They could not forget that he had, in their mothers words, “lost two wives in car accidents and taken a third.” They wondered about those two unfortunate lost ladies. They asked each other what their fate had been, and if neither could ever be found again. James never brought his third wife with him nor ever mentioned her. He must be so frightened of losing her that he never allowed her outside the door.

56. How often did James come to visit his brother? (within 3 words)

57. What would James and his brother do when James visited his brother? (within 8 words)

58. Why did Maggie wake up children when James was about to leave? (within 7 words)

59. What happened to James first two wives? (within 5 words)

60. Why didnt James bring his wife with him nor even mentioned her? (within 7 words)

第二节 短文改错(满分15分)

Life on land probably began about 430 millions years ago. It is thought that life had existed in the water for perhaps as far as 3,000 million years. When we think of the first life on land, we probably think of strange animal coming out in the ocean. But, in fact, no animals could have been living if plants have not been on land first. Plants had to be on land after animals arrived. They supplied to the first land animals food necessary to live. Plants are the only form of life that are able to get but store energy. Plants are so important!
