A Notice
It was a small town which lay on the coast. Most people there lived by catching fish. The hurricanes often struck the area from July to October. Some of the people died in the sea when their boats were blown over by the heavy winds. So they paid much attention to the weather forecasts. They were afraid to meet with the hurricanes when they were catching fish on the sea. Each of the families had a radio and people always took them with themselves and listened to them at any time.
It was September. A hurricane attacked the town one night. Plenty of trees were pushed over and all the electric and telephone lines were broken. People couldnt watch TV, or call their friends, or go to work. To their anger, they couldnt listen to the weather forecasts the Town Radio Station broadcast. The food and fresh water would soon be short and the patients couldnt be given medical care—no medicine could be carried there. People didnt know what would happen and they looked anxious.
On the fourth day they read a notice on the Town Weekly. It was written, “Recently we have to stop the weather forecast because of the bad weather. We usually get the forecasts from the airport. But the roads are all blocked by the fallen trees and stones. Whether or not well be able to broadcast the weather forecast tomorrow depends on the weather!”
51. Why do the people in the town often took radios with themselves?

D. They hoped to get some good news.

English is the most widely used language in the history of our planet. One in every seven human beings can speak it. More than half of the worlds books and three quarters of international mails are in English. Of all languages, English has the largest vocabulary — perhaps as many as two million words.
However, lets face it: English is a crazy language. There is no egg in an eggplant, neither pine nor apple in a pineapple and no ham in a hamburger. Sweet-meats are candy, while sweetbreads, which arent sweet, are meat.
When we explore its paradoxes (矛盾), we find that quicksand can work slowly, boxing rings are square, public bathrooms have no baths in them.
And why is it that a writer writes, but fingers dont fing, grocers dont groce, and hammers dont ham? If the plural (复数) of tooth is teeth, shouldnt the plural of booth be beeth? One goose, two geese — so one moose, two meese?
How can a slim chance and a fat chance be the same, while a wise man and a wise guy are opposites? How can overlook and oversee be opposites, while quite a lot and quite a few are alike? How can the weather be hot as hell one day and cold as hell the next?
English was invented by people, not computers, and it show the creativity of human beings. Thats why, when stars are out, they are visible (能看见的); but when the lights are out, they are invisible. And why, when I wind up my watch, I start it; but when I wind up this passage, I end it.
54. What can you learn from this passage?
A. Boxing rings should be round.
B. Pineapples are the apples on the pine tree.
C. There should be an egg in an eggplant.
D. Sweet-meats and sweetbreads are different things.
55. Which of the following is the correct plural?
A. Beeth. B. Geese.
C. Meese. D. Tooth.
56. Which of the following includes two items which have the similar meaning?
A. A wise man and a wise guy. B. Overlook and oversee.
C. Quite a lot and quite a few. D. Hot as hell and cold as hell.
57. The underlined words “wind up” in the last paragraph probably mean “____”.
A. forget B. start
C. send D. finish
C
Geologists have been studying volcanoes for a long time. Though they have learned a great deal, they still have not discovered the cause of volcanic action. They know that the inside of the earth is very hot, but they are not sure exactly what causes the great heat. Some geologists have thought that the heat was caused by the great pressure of the earths outer layers, or the heat may be left from the time when the earth was formed. During the last sixty years scientists have learned about a lot of radioactive elements (放射性元素). Many scientists now believe that much of the heat inside the earth is produced by radioactive elements.
Whatever the cause of the heat may be, we do know that the earth gets hotter the farther down we dig. In deep mines and oil wells the temperatures rise about 1°F for every 50 feet. At this rate of the temperature, 40 miles below the earths surface should be over 4000°. This is much hotter than necessary to melt rock. However, the pressure of the rock above keeps most materials from melting at their usual melting points. Geologists believe that the rock deep in the earth may be plastic, or puttylike (油灰状的). In other words, the rock changes slowly, but is not liquid. But if some changes in the earths crust (地壳) let out the pressure, the rock melts. Then the hot, liquid rock can move up toward the surface.
58. Whats the cause of the great heat inside of the earth?
A. Not certain.
B. The radioactive elements giving out heat.
C. The great pressure of the earths outer layers.
D. The heat left from the time when the earth was formed.
59. What prevents most rock from melting at its usual melting points?
A. The pressure of the rock itself.
B. The pressure of the rock above.
C. The pressure of the earths outer layers.
D. The heat given out by some radioactive elements.
60. Which of the following statements is true?
A. Rock would be melted at 4000°.
B. The rock deep in the earth is liquid.
C. The farther down, the cooler the earth gets.
D. When the pressure is let out from the earths crust, the rock wont melts.

Paul and Jason were brothers who lived and worked on neighbouring farms. For 35 years they farmed side by side, sharing machinery and goods as needed, without a single problem. However, one autumn, things changed. It began with a tiny disagreement about a horse, which grew into a major difference. The difference led to angry words, followed by weeks of silence between the two brothers.
One morning there was a knock on Pauls door. He opened it and saw a builder holding his toolbox. “Im looking for a few days work,”the builder said. “Are there any jobs here I could help with?”
“Yes,”answered Paul, extremely pleased to see the builder. “I do have a job for you. Look at that farm across the creek (小溪). Thats my brothers farm. That creek used to be a grass field, but last week my brother dug a path from the river and made the creek. See that pile of wood? I want you to build me a fence, two metres tall, so 1 wont need to see him anymore.”
Paul had business in town that day and left the builder to his work. When he returned, the builder had just finished his job. Paul was shocked. Instead of a fence there was a bridge, stretching from one side of the creek to the other.
As Paul stood on the bridge, staring in amazement, his younger brother Jason, came across, and took Pauls hand. “You are a good man to have built this bridge after all I've done,”said Jason.
Then, Paul, with tears in his eyes, said to the builder who was packing his bag to go,“Thank you so much. Please stay. I have much more for you to do.”
“Id love to.”the builder said quietly, “but, I have many more bridges to build.”
