most一词既可用作形容词,也可用作副词和名词。本文结合一些实例对most的基本用法作一概述:
一、形容词most可用作many, much的最高级,意为“最多的”、“最高程度的”,后面可跟可数名词的复数形式或不可数名词;形容词most可表示“多数的”、“大部分的”、“多半的”等意思,后面可跟可数名词复数形式。例如:
He wants to get the most votes in the election.
他想在选举中得到最多的票数。
Who has the most need of help? 谁最需要帮助?
Most children like ice-cream. 大多数孩子喜欢吃冰淇淋。
Most people think so. 大多数人都这么想。
二、most用作副词时,有下面几种用法:
1. 常置于两个音节以上的形容词或副词之前,并与其一起构成该词的最高级形式。例如:
Which lesson is the most difficult in this book?
这本书里哪一课最难?
Li Ying writes (the) most carefully of the three.
三个人中李英写得最认真。
2. 表示“极”、“很”、“十分”、“非常”等意思,用来强调或加强语气。在这种情况下,most前面不用定冠词the。例如:
This is a most useful book. 这是一本极其有用的书。
Thats most kind of you. 你心肠真好。
We shall most certainly come. 我们一定来。
3. 表示“几乎”、“差不多”等意思,相当于almost/nearly。例如:
Most everybody talks about it. 几乎每个人都在谈论此事。
She goes to the shop most every day. 她几乎天天去商店。
三、most用作名词,其意为“最大量”、“最多数”、“最高额”、“大多数”、“大部分”、“大多数人”。例如:
Do the most you can. 尽你所能去做。
Most of them aren't at home now. 他们中的大多数人现在不在家。
The most are on our side. 大多数人都支持我们。
