THE sturdy earthen dwelling compounds known as tulou are typical of the residences to befound in mountainous Fujian Province,in southeastern China,and in July they were officiallyincluded on UNESCOs list of World Heritage sites.According to the selection committee,chebuildings represen exceptional examples of a building tradition that combines harmoniouscommunal living arrangements with defensive needs,alongside a balanced relationship with nature.
