ON the evening of Septem-ber 11，2008，on the eve ofthe traditional Mid-autumnFestival in China．the Shi-jazhuang-based Sanlu Group publiclyadmitted that its dairy products had beencontaminated by melamine，a chemicalsubstance commonly used in plasticsproduction．This is another serious foodsafety scandal to have occurred in Chi-nas dairy products industry since the“big-headed babies”incident in Fuyang，Anhui Province in 2004．
