The CPC Central Committee has since 2012 given employmenta prominent position in governance. It has prioritizedemployment and improved mechanisms for boosting employment,successfully addressing various challenges. On average,13 million urban jobs were created annually from 2013 to 2022.

At present, the scale, structure, and quality of employmentin China continues to expand and improve. The employmentof key groups also remains stable. High-quality and full employmenthas become a driving force supporting economicdevelopment and improving people’s wellbeing.

Italian Painter’s RarePortrait of ChineseEmperor Put onDisplay in Shanghai

A rare portrait of a Chineseemperor by an Italian painter wasunveiled on June 16 in Shanghai,China. It was the first time thework was exhibited in China overthe last 300 years.

The portrait of EmperorKangxi who ruled during the QingDynasty (1644-1911) is an intriguingaddition to the exhibition“The 18th Century Masterpieces,”which features pieces from thecollections of Uffizi Galleries in"Italy. The exhibition is being heldat the Bund One Art Museum inShanghai and will continue untilAugust 25.

The artsist Giovanni Gherardinitraveled to China witha group of missionaries in 1698and completed the paintingwhen serving at the imperialcourt in Beijing between 1700and 1704. Some records suggestthe portrait was taken to Italy afew years later.

The portrait presents Kangxiin blue casual attire. His facelooks younger and distinctfrom the portrait of the bookreadingemperor in the PalaceMuseum’s collection, whichthe Chinese public are morefamiliar with.

Simone Verde, director ofthe Uffizi Galleries, said it wascommon for painters with differenttechniques and subjectiveimpressions to presentvery different looks of the sameperson.

“We hope that one day thetwo portraits can be exhibitedtogether, so that the audiencewill have their own answers,” hesaid, commenting on the differentrenderings of the emperor’sappearance.

Chinese Yuju Operaand CalligraphyCultural SalonHeld in Paris

On June 30, a cultural salon onChinese Yuju Opera and calligraphywas held at the China CulturalCenter in Paris, France. Theevent was co-hosted by the ChinaCultural Center in Paris, theChina Arts and EntertainmentGroup Ltd., as well as the Culture,Radio, TV amp; Tourism Bureau ofKaifeng, a city in Henan Province,home of the Yuju Opera. Over100 Chinese and French guestsattended the cultural salon.

Wu Suzhen, now an inheritorof the Chen School of Yuju Opera,who in 2019 won the Plum PerformanceAward, China’s top honorfor traditional Chinese theatricalart, performed on stage in thetraditional “qingyi” role of YujuOpera. Wu specializes in performingthe role of “qingyi” — dignifiedfemale characters who oftenexude elegance and maturity.

Besides vividly explaining theprofessional aspects of Chineseopera through body movementsand vocal demonstrations at theevent, Wu also invited the French"audience to learn some parts ofChinese opera on the spot.

Originating in Henan Province,Yuju Opera is China’s leadinglocal opera having the largestnumber of performers andtroupes. In 2006, it was listed bythe State Council as part of thefirst batch of national intangiblecultural heritage. In recent years,as Yuju Opera has continuouslyreached the world stage, it hasearned the title of “Eastern Aria”in the West.

After the opera performance,attendees moved to the calligraphyexperience area, where theywatched the renowned calligrapherLi Jian demonstrate hisunique \"slender gold\" calligraphystyle. \"Slender gold\" is a uniquestyle of calligraphy attributed toZhao Ji, Emperor Huizong of theSong Dynasty (960-1279), namedfor its resemblance to twistedand turned gold filaments inZhao’s writing.
