Chinese painting, also known as the traditional national painting, one of the traditional paintings with a long history, has its unique and independent system. Using brushes, ink, and Chinese pigments (颜料), a painting is drawn on a special kind of paper (Xuan paper) or silk. The traditional subjects are figures, landscapes, flowers and birds.
In comparison with Western painting, Chinese painting has its own artistic characteristics. After a careful study of the object, a painter can discover the rules of its structure, and then produce it by the mind’s eye. It is not merely a simple copy, but it combines the object with the artistic concept of the producer, turning a natural image into an “artistic image”. The object can show the artist’s feelings and personality to achieve the effect of “being alike not only in spirit, but also in appearance”. Not all the objects are to be drawn on the paper, and much space is left for the imagination. The use of lines is important in Chinese painting. Clear, swift, sharp and changeable lines are combined with the push, point and press of the brush and ink to show the quality of the object and variations of tone (色調). Ancient Chinese artists listed 18 different ways of drawing lines with the brush in figure painting. Different ways of creating lines are used when painting landscapes, flowers and birds, clouds, and bamboos.
Traditional Chinese painting and calligraphy are different branches of art stemming (起源) from the same origin. They use the same kind of tools and all the lines used in painting are variations of the points and lines of calligraphy. Though they are different artistic forms, they are closely linked in terms of their expression of thoughts and feelings. They influence each other to create another artistic feature.
1. What word can describe the common subjects of traditional Chinese painting?
A. Independent. B. Valuable. C. Special. D. Natural.
2. The author believes a traditional Chinese painter’s picture ________.
A. tells a true story B. expresses his thoughts

3. It can be inferred that a traditional Chinese painter spent much time ________.

Painting
The art of creating pictures using colors, shapes and lines is called painting. Museums and galleries show the paintings of professional artists. But painting is also a popular form of entertainment and creative expression.
1 Experienced painters usually use a brush to apply oil paints to a canvas. Young painters usually use watercolors on pieces of paper. Very young children may use finger paints to create paintings.
Painters can use their art to express devotion to a religion (宗教), tell a story, express feelings and ideas, or simply present a pleasing picture. Religious paintings often show a god or a scene from a sacred text. Other common subjects have been famous legends and events in history, as well as scenes from daily life. Artists also paint portraits, or pictures of people. 2 All of these types of paintings show the human figure in some way.
Some kinds of paintings do not focus on people. In landscapes the focus is on scenes from nature. Artists also paint still objects such as fruits and vegetables. 3 Some artists communicate their ideas through pictures that do not represent any object.
4 Paintings dating back 15,000 years have been found on the walls of caves (洞穴) in France and Spain. 5 Samples of painted pottery (陶器) from at least 5,000 years ago have been found in China and Iran. I’ve been thinking a lot lately about how creative people are inspired, and at the same time, how consciously I seek out inspiration in my own life.
One of the most inspiring things I do on a regular basis is to visit an art gallery. I have a membership to a modern art museum, and I like to wander through just for an hour, limiting myself to just one section. Having a membership means that I can take my time, and really soak in (沉浸于……之中) the creative atmosphere.
I also love to travel, as time and money permit. Getting out of my comfort zone is inspiring, and I’ve been inspired by discovering the way I react to new and often surprising situations. Equally, I love coming home, and applying the lessons I’ve learned to my work and everyday life.
For me, inspiration comes from learning new things. I am eager to continue learning, so I sign up for online courses. I may not actually complete (or even start) many of the courses that I sign up for, but when I do, I am immediately transported into the world of whatever I’m learning: I completed a course on drawing, and gained so much confidence. I went through a course on branding, and learned some great techniques.
All of these courses may have had some elements that I already knew, but the teachers put their own personal spin (導向性陈述) on them which expressed them as something new. And there was always enough content that was new to me, to inspire some new types of creativity.
Finally, I get inspiration through sharing my stories and the work I create. The conversations I’ve had with people after they have read my writing have been some of the most enlightening (有启发作用的). Often, they have even been surprising discussions with people I’ve been friends with for some time, but have never talked with them like this before.

Do you know sand has been used to draw pictures since ancient times? Today, sandpainting, an interesting art, will be introduced to you.
Sandpainting is an art of using the sand to make a fixed or unfixed painting. Maybe we all played fixed sandpainting as we were young. We first painted a simple picture, then we brushed glue to the section, and at last we poured colored sand onto the glue in order to make it fixed.
Unfixed sandpainting has a long cultural history around the world. People poured sand on a surface to make paintings or use some tools to draw pictures in the sand directly. They are often temporary. Different people draw sand paintings to express different meanings: love of nature, admiration for God or love of beauty.
Nowadays, sandpainting becomes a performance art and its popularity has risen. On the stages, sandpainting performers make a series of images by drawing lines and figures in the sand with their fingers and hands. The series of images are used to tell a story.
Kseniya Simonova, who is from Ukraine, is one of the greatest sandpainting performers in the world. People call her “The Lady of the Sand”.
Simonova said that she never dreamed she’d become a sand artist, and when she began practicing, she nearly gave it up. But she persevered, caring for a household and her baby by day and training every night. You Are Always Nearby is one of the most famous performances of Simonova. It is a story about a young couple separated by a war in which the solider is tragically killed, but returns in spirit to watch over his wife and child. This performance makes all audience cry.
Art is everywhere and is not far away from common people. Art of painting is in our life, even in the sand.
