One day， a group of four friends decided to pay a visit to a carnival1， which hadstopped in the village for the weekend. It only came once a year， and the group offriends wanted to visit the carnival so much. Rose， Samantha， Vanessa and Michaelwere as happy as anyone that this weekend had finally arrived. They brought theirpet monkey along with them to share in the fun. His name was Merlin， and with thegentlest2 smile and dazzling3 eyes， many villagers liked him very much. The peoplewho ran the carnival came from different countries， and spoke different languages.Merlin had never been to a carnival before， and his owners were happy to show hima good time.

When they arrived at the carnival， the group of four friends got in close to talkabout where they should head first. They quickly made up their minds4 to head forthe Haunted5 House， and turned around to take Merlin with them. To their surprise，Merlin was not there. He had disappeared6 in the crowds7 and the four friends gotgreatly worried.

They had done it before to find Samanthas younger sister， Rachel. Rosecould do a drawing of who was missing， so that she could ask people if they hadseen anyone looking like Merlin. Samantha spoke many languages and could askany people from another country if they had seen Merlin. Vanessa could do thesounds and actions of Merlin to see if anyone recognized9 them， and Michael couldask whether anyone had seen his dear Merlin in his songs.

They tried to find Merlin at the Haunted House， wherea man was looking after the ride10. Rose drew a picture ofMerlin and asked， “Have you seen my Merlin？”The man said something， and itseemed he did not know English. Samantha quickly asked the man in anotherlanguage if he knew where Merlin was. The man answered in such a way that all fourof the friends knew that Merlin was not at the Haunted House.

Next， they went to the teacups， where Vanessa did the sounds and actions thatMerlin usually does. The woman looking after the teacups laughed and turned away.Michael began to sing and used his song to ask a question， and the woman tooknotice of this， and said，“Im sorry， my dear. I have not seen your monkey.”

Finally， they went to the carousel11. Roseshowed her drawing of Merlin to people， butnobody knew where Merlin was. Michael sang，but nobody answered back. Samantha askedquestions in many languages， but no goodnews came. When Vanessa did the sounds that Merlin makes， and similar12 soundscame from the carousel. Merlin ran to the four friends， and they were so happy tohave him back.
