Island of the Blue Dolphins writtenby American author Scott ODell, is ahistorical novel for children that has soldmore than 6 million copies in the UnitedStates alone since it was published in1960. It was awarded by the AmericanAssociation as one of the 10 greatestchildrens literature works ( 兒童文学作品) since 1776 and won two highesthonors of the international prize for childrens literature — the Newbury Medal (纽伯瑞儿童文化奖) and the Hanss Christian Andersen Award ( 安徒生奖).
In the story, the main character Karana lived alone on the island for 18 years. Before the arrival of the rescue ships, she built a shelter alone, made weapons and fishing gear, fought with wild dogs, and endured manyhardships to survive.
One of the most striking elements of the book is theportrayal of Karanas struggle for survival in completeisolation. Her wisdom and courage are inspiring, showing the spirit of humanity.Despite the hardships, Karana adapted to her surroundings successfully.
Personally, the book left a significant impact on me. Karanas resilience inthe face of adversity is admirable. It is also heartening to see her develop empathytowards animals instead of hurting them. This evolution also reflects the bookstheme of understanding and respecting all forms of life.
