Combined Planting

Farmers across Shandong Province have begun harvesting corn and soybeans that were planted using a combined planting method designed to increase the efficiency and yields of the local farmland, reported on October 18.

The method involves planting two rows of corn for every four rows of soybeans. Because of the height difference between the crops, the amount of sunlight and airflow is maximized.

“The corn yield is no less than when we plant corn alone, and what’s more, we also have a harvest of soybeans,” said Zhang Deping, who is in charge of a cooperative in the village of Qianjiangjunmiao in Yucheng, a county-level city in Shandong Province.

This is the first year that combined soybean and corn planting has been promoted across the country, especially in the areas along the Yellow River and the Huaihe River, and in southwest and northwest China, in a bid to increase soybean production.

Statistics show the total area of combined soybean and corn planting this year reached 1 million hectares.

Higher and Stronger

Rural students in China have grown taller and stronger on average over the past decade thanks to a nutrition improvement plan providing daily lunches to rural primary and middle school students, according to the Ministry of Education(MOE),reported on October 18.

Surveys of students in some 700 counties during the past 10 years revealed that 13-yearold males have seen the most growth in height and weight over the decade, who were on average 7.5 cm taller and 6.6 km heavier in 2021 than those in 2012.

Twelve-year-old female students were on average 6.3 cm taller and 5.8 kg heavier in 2021 compared with the average levels of those in 2012.

The surveys found the growth retardation rate of students aged 6 to 15 dropped to 2.3 percent in 2021, down by 5.7 percentage points from 2012, while the obesity rate of rural students reached 18.7 percent last year, 7.8 percentage points lower than the national average.

The anemia rate also dropped from 16.7 percent in 2012 to 12 percent in 2021, with an even bigger reduction seen in students in western regions.

The surveys also found that rural students have more access to meat, vegetables and dairy products, and more schools had built their own canteens.

Food Bank

Shenzhen’s Futian District has launched the Futian Food Bank,a public welfare program that encourages food-related enterprises to donate produce that is surplus or about to expire, reported on October 18.The aim is to reduce food waste and help people in need.

People can choose the donated items via the iShenzhen app and collect them from six machines around the district.

The service is currently open to low-income people. A total of 4,220 people have benefited from the service since it was launched at the end of May.About eight tons of food have been saved, equivalent to cutting 16 tons of carbon emissions.

Futian District plans to increase the number of dispensing machines and expand the number of qualified recipients to the general public.

Through the program, the district aims to save 70 tons of food, reduce 140 tons of carbon dioxide emissions and benefit 140,000 residents each year.

Electric Riverboat

A cold-region electric riverboat has been launched on a tributary of the Songhua River in Heilongjiang Province, according to theon October 18.

The intelligent river cruise boat, about 27 meters long and six meters wide, is equipped with four groups of lithium batteries with a total capacity of 600 kWh.It has a designed total tonnage of 138 and can seat 53 people.

The trial speed of this riverboat on water that is both deep and still is at least 18 km per hour, with a battery life of about eight hours.

Green intelligent boats and ships offer advantages of high efficiency, fast response and convenient maintenance. They have gradually become the main inland waterway transport choice in southern provinces, said the newspaper.

However, high latitude cold regions with temperatures of minus 30 degrees Celsius or lower in winter, such as in northeast China, tend to impact negatively on the performance of the battery and charging equipment of such boats and ships.

Researchers from the Harbin Engineering University, the Harbin Electric Corp. and the Heilongjiang Shipping Group responded to this challenge by applying appropriate energy management technology to enhance the efficiency of the riverboat’s power generator in the cold conditions.

In OrbitA Long March rocket carrying the S-SAR01, a new satellite for disaster reduction, emergency management and environmental monitoring, blasts off from the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center in Shanxi Province on October 13. The satellite’s primary users will be the Ministry of Emergency Management and the Ministry of Ecology and Environment.

The endangered flowers bloomed in July, the first group flowering of the species under artificial cultivation globally.

The species, officially known as, is native to Indonesia. It is known as a corpse flower because of the rotting smell that helps it attract pollinators when the plant is in bloom.

Staff at the garden dissected the fruits and found apparent embryos in August. The fruits have grown rapidly since then.

The staff recently dissected the fruits again and found that the seeds had taken shape, separated from the pulp and developed seed coats.

The fruit-bearing activity reflects the high level of cultivation and conservation at the China National Botanical Garden and is of great significance to conserving the species.

Commitment to Opening Up

China will unswervingly expand all-around opening up and push economic globalization toward being more open, inclusive, balanced and beneficial to all,Zhao Chenxin, Vice Minister of the National Development and Reform Commission, said on October 17.

There has been misunderstanding about the new pattern of development that is focused on the domestic economy and features positive interplay between domestic and international economic flows, he told a press conference on the sidelines of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China.

It is wrong to think that by focusing on the domestic economy China will scale back its opening-up efforts or even turn into a “self-sufficient economy,”according to Zhao.

Economic globalization has become an irreversible trend, he said, adding that China is already deeply integrated into the global economy and the international system, and the industries of China and many other countries are highly interconnected and interdependent.

He stressed fostering a new pattern of development is important for China to achieve development that is of higher quality and is more efficient, fair, sustainable and secure.

In Tandem

October 17

Cycling has become the hot recreational thing to do in recent years. For those wanting to catch up with the trend, one important issue to tackle is where to cycle. From 2021 to 2025,Beijing plans to create 40 cycling routes and cover every urban road wider than 12 meters with cycle tracks.

Similar projects include bike lanes along the Fenhe River in Shanxi Province and a bike path running across the water at Xinglin Bay in Fujian Province. Clearing new space for cycling, these projects are all attempts in urban planning to overcome the relative shortage of cyclable roads.

Newly released guidelines encourage the fusion of fitness facilities with urban green spaces as well as people’s production and living areas. Under these guidelines, Beijing’s Changping District introduced 12 cycling routes, each boasting special themed art or historical sites, while Chengdu in Sichuan Province incorporated bike lanes into its various parks.

These policies working in tandem not only make full use of existing roads, but also connect isolated cityscapes so that they become cohesive cultural narratives with continuous scenic views.

A Higher Plane

September 26

First developed in the 90s by Professor John Kasarda at the University of North Carolina, the U.S., the aerotropolis concept, fusing the terms “aero” and“metropolis,” denotes a metropolitan subregion whose infrastructure, land use and economy are centered on an airport.

“We are providing a platform for global youth to have a say and propose innovative ideas for the agrifood system’s transformation we need.”

Qu Dongyu, Director General of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, at the 2022 World Food Forum as it kicked off on October 17

“Let us consign poverty to the pages of history.”

António Guterres, UN Secretary General, in a video message played at an event marking the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty on October 17

This particular urban model connects time-sensitive suppliers, manufacturers, and distributors to distant clients and marketplaces. Conscious of the strategic importance of airport economics, many countries have constructed their own aerotropolises.

China has established various airport economic zones across the nation. As the first state-level aerotropolis, the Zhengzhou Airport Economy Zone in Henan Province has stimulated economic growth throughout central China.

So which of these regions will rise to compete in the global air traffic race? The two most likely candidates are Shanghai Pudong International Airport and Beijing Daxing International Airport. With the opening of its free trade zone, a Disneyland and a manufacturing center for commercial aircraft,Shanghai aims to become one of the world’s largest transportation hubs.

In operation since 2019, Beijing Daxing International Airport is expected to become a key motor for Beijing, Tianjin, and Hebei’s coordinated development. The future transformation of these zones into world-class airport cities will not only drive an economic upswing, but also lift China’s international standing to a higher plane.

Fountain of Youth

. October 13

Netizens, shopaholics, travel enthusiasts, sports aficionados—words pertaining to youth are now used to describe China’s post-60s, a generation which today sees a record high of 20 million people retiring per year.

These new retirees are highly educated, affluent, fashionable and sociable. Their increasingly diversified and individualized demands have stimulated new modes of lifestyles.

The concept of lifelong learning summarizes the spiritual aspect of active aging for many new retirees. The rising popularity of senior academies nowadays reflects a widespread thirst for knowledge among the nation’s older generations.

This new generation of retirees also devotes itself to social work. No longer satisfied with being surrounded by loved ones and having access to medical care, the new retirees actively pursue fun, knowledge and a sense of fulfillment. A precise focus on their needs will result in better senior care and a thriving silver economy.
