Can you understand Zhejiang today? Back in June, a highly anticipated provincial brand slogan titled “Picturesque and Dynamic Zhejiang” opened up the imagination of Zhejiang people. The short title specifies picturesque landscapes and the continuous cultural context of Zhejiang; but its long significance connects the past and the future, and triggers the spirit of Zhejiang people who dare to experiment and stand at the forefront of the times in embrace of change.
Not long after this brand slogan was put forward, Zhejiang authorities invited 18 experts and scholars from various industries and fields for their opinions about Zhejiang. The conversations were like brainstorms. We found that the nature of Jiangnan (south of the Yangtze River) and the spirit of Zhejiang have long been engrained in their genes.
“This slogan condenses the yesterday, today and tomorrow of Zhejiang, as well as the landscape, humanities and spirit of Zhejiang. The creation and cultivation of a provincial brand is undoubtedly a pioneering work,” He Jianhua, former deputy president of Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, commented. When high-frequency words such as “hometown, landscape, humanities, development, present, future” continue to appear in our interviews, a “fresh and living” Zhejiang gradually emerges.
From the rich and fertile Hangzhou-Jiaxing-Huzhou Plain to the beautiful Tang Poetry Road; from the coast of the East China Sea, to the green mountains in southern Zhejiang ... Zhejiang is an important birthplace of the Jiangnan culture. After years of accumulation, those picturesque landscapes have been integrated with people to have constructed the realistic source of the picturesque Zhejiang and the poetic Jiangnan.
Hometown is one of the elements that appear frequently in the interviews. The hometown of archaeologist Du Zhengxian is Yanqian village in Dongyang county, Jinhua city, that of writer on children’s stories Shen Shixi, Dongdu village in Cixi, countylevel city in Ningbo city and the hometown of cultural scholar Jin Yuanpu is Pujiang county, Jinhua city the origin of the world’s rice farming culture ...

People and places are always closely related. These people were born and grew up in Zhejiang, so they are also the best at drawing inspiration from their familiar land. The traces of her hometown can be found in many works by Tang Tang. The inspiration for Tang Tang’s Fantasy Childhood Storybooks came from Nangangyao village in Wuyi county, Jinhua city where she grew up; Beauty Tree originated from the big tree at the entrance of the village; and Water Elf Kakasha from an earthen house next to the sunning ground when she was a child…. “My hometown filled my childhood with sunshine, rain, dew and aroma of vegetation, and it has always been warm and fragrant to this day,” she said.
The 76-year-old painter He Shuifa still travels all over the province in search of a smart lotus flower. “It’s the same lotus, but when it blooms in different places, it brings different scenery. For example, the lotus in the West Lake is gathered in various corners, with a wide field of vision; the ten-mile lotus in Wuyi comes in hundreds of varieties….” In his eyes, brush and ink are the lifeblood of traditional Chinese painting, with water as the soul and sketching as the dialogue between the artist and life.
The Grand Canal is the place where writer Hai Fei’s footprints are scattered. Whenever he is tired of writing, needs inspiration,or even wanders aimlessly, he would always walk down the Grand Canal. The image of Jiangnan is also engraved with the pen of this Jiangnan writer. Over the years, the Haixiao Qiangqiang Public Welfare Children’s Library, which he planned and promoted, is only seven steps away from the Grand Canal.
Living in the Jingtingqiao area of Hangzhou in his childhood,Li Jiabiao, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, naturally has an affinity for water, which triggered him to leave his own life track in the deeper and farther ocean exploration. He said with emotion that deeply buried marine sediments contain our historical and cultural memories.
During the interviews, we found an invisible “bond” between regions, humanities, arts and history. He Jianhua is inclined to understand poetic Jiangnan and picturesque Zhejiang as a dynamic motif. “These words lend people rich and visual associations, that is, there are paintings in poems, poems in paintings, and this artistic conception will show a sense of picture, which reminds us of poetry and distant places,” he said.
Jiangnan is intoxicating not only because of its scenery, but because of the character of the local people forged by the accumulation of humanities and history. Whether it is a Zhejiang native living elsewhere, or a “new Zhejiang residents” working in this land, they are all good at making breakthroughs and being adventurous. Once you understand the people, you will open the window of “Dynamic Zhejiang”.
“The Liangzhu people 5,000 years ago must have been the most energetic at that time, which is why they left us such a mysterious and rich legacy,” Xu Tianjin, the new director of Liangzhu Museum (Liangzhu Research Institute), explained quite innovatively the influence of geographical environment on people.“The environmentalists believe that the progress of civilization mainly depends on the environment. The large space in which people live has a great influence on them, and this influence must be mutual.” Just as many people admired him for his courage of“taking over” Liangzhu Museum, he was also impressed by the courage of his hometown Yongkang Hardware City in Jinhua city to win over the world. “This is inseparable from the vibrant cultural genes in Yongkang people’s bones,” Xu said.
Qian Qian, an academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences from Anhui province, has been in continuous contact with Zhejiang people for nearly 40 years. “In my opinion, whether celebrities or ordinary workers, they all have extraordinary vitality,”according to Qian. He said with a smile that he has been like a migratory bird for decades, “going south and north” in the cause of molecular breeding, perhaps because of this.
This vitality triggers people to continuously explore how to shape a promising Zhejiang in the turbulent times. Many years ago, the crystal processing industry developed rapidly in Pujiang, and the “scattering and polluting” industrial model caused damage to rivers and lakes, which made Jin Yuanpu in Beijing frown. “Ecoenvironment is the natural advantage of Pujiang county, Jinhua city and the integration of people, environment and economy can give birth to the greatest driving force for development.” Now, the much-criticized “Milk River” and “Trash Lake” have been treated, and Jinshi Lake, Cuihu Lake and Tongji Lake are rippling with green water. “The new look of reform and development in our hometown has enhanced our sense of belonging and pride,” he said.
Zhang Yinglan, a native of Xi’an, has just completed six years of work in Zhejiang University. He is happy that Zhejiang is continuing to write poems about cultural heritage with full vigor. From the free access to the West Lake to the successful operation of Liangzhu Site Administrative Committee, and the current construction of “Thousands of Village Museums”,Zhejiang’s “ideas” and “adventure” in the protection, inheritance and utilization of cultural heritage have impressed Zhang. He said, “This ‘vitality’ not only enables these sites, ancient buildings and cultural relics to be recognized and understood by the public, but also enables these heritages, which have been distanced from modern life, to play a role of cultural impetus in modern life.”

Now, Han Xu, a designer who grew up in Inner Mongolia, has a different view of Zhejiang villages in the new era. A few years ago, he participated in the design of the visual image and symbol system of the rural cultural auditoriums in Zhejiang province.During the four-month preliminary investigation, the creative team integrated into the local cultural life through a complete record and experience of “24 hours in the countryside”. He was somewhat surprised to find that many rural areas are no longer synonymous with “backwardness and isolation”. In the plain of northern Zhejiang, many villagers run their own businesses, attracting “new villagers” from all over China. “This impetus, regardless of urban or rural areas, is a portrayal of Zhejiang in the new era,” according to He. “The Wenzhou Model and the modern internet economy are good examples.” He Jianhua said that even in the face of development difficulties, Zhejiang people are brave enough to innovate and make breakthroughs, which is also the humanistic spirit of Zhejiang.
“Wang Xufeng and Zhao Yanjun recommend Shaoxing to you”, “ Xu Tianjin and Tang Tang yearn for the spiritual world of Zhejiang historical celebrity Wang Yangming”, “Du Zhengxian and Jin Yuanpu’s favorite Zhejiang food is Dongpo pork”, and“Chen Ye and Pang Long praise the tough and smart Zhejiang people” ...
When the series of interviews came to an end, a series of postcards was born accordingly with the themes of “A Touch of Jiangnan”, “A Page of a Book”, “Fragrant Food”, and “A Trace of Love”. At this moment, these little cards carrying landscape pictures and innovative vitality have been sent from Hangzhou to faraway places.
After reading the series of interviews, Chang Jie, an entrepreneur who first arrived in Hangzhou, sent us a WeChat message: “I chose to start a business in Zhejiang because of the humanistic atmosphere here and the pragmatism of Zhejiang people. Zhejiang people in my eyes are like Hang Jiahe, the protagonist of the Tea People Trilogy. Under the thin and healthy appearance, there is a stout, affectionate and responsible heart ...”She most wanted to send a postcard to her mother in Beijing. “I want to invite her to Hangzhou to taste tea in September, and I want to take her to read Wang Xufeng’s new book Viewing Jiangnan together,” she said.
When the postcard was delivered to Du Zhengxian, the Archaeology Department of Zhejiang University City College, where he is Chairman, welcomed its first freshmen. “The Department of Archaeology started from nothing, and it is the hard work of many people. Without a little courage, or a little future-oriented thinking, it can’t be done.” He said that the vitality of Zhejiang is written on the faces of these vigorous young people.Zhejiang is a large province of cultural relics. In the future, the Department of Archaeology will send talents to this extraordinary cause.
At the China National Silk Museum, the Zhejiang Museum of Natural History, and the Zhejiang Academy of Agricultural Sciences, young researchers and tourists wrote their blessings on postcards. The thin cards carried profound wishes, and together with today’s Zhejiang, to the distant places. The postcards spanning thousands of rivers and mountains have shortened the distance between people and this land. Although studying abroad in France, Zhejiang University alumni “Pear” still cares about Jiangnan: “Hangzhou is one of the cities I care about most.No matter where I go, there is always a place in my heart for her.” Having worked in Zhejiang for a dozen years, Zhong Jiye,a delivery boy from Jiangxi, couldn’t hide his excitement: “In recent years, I have seen cities in Zhejiang become more and more beautiful, and high-rise buildings are shooting up. I hope that I will be more and more dynamic like here.”
People who have ties to Zhejiang are all thinking in the same way: Why do we need provincial brands in today’s Zhejiang? As the most distinctive logo of a province, the provincial brand is not only to enhance the overall strength, but also to condense the spirit. It is also an important way to showcase the overall image to the outside world and expand its influence.
“It’s like no matter how many natural and social resources a city has, it always has one source to trace,” Jin Yuanpu said that a provincial brand is a business card that tells us what kind of “soul”a city should have. You could experience the unique connotation of the city from it. He expected that in the future, Zhejiang could better explore this “soul”, expand the connotation of the provincial brand, and highly integrate culture and technology through digital reform.
