Hualong One Project Ready to Go

China’s Hualong One demonstration project, a domestically designed third-generation nuclear reactor,has been completed and put into commercial opera-tion in March, according to China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC).

China’s first Hualong One unit, the No.5 unit, entered commercial operation back in January 2021, and now the second, the No.6 unit, which is located in the city of Fuqing in eastern Fujian Province, has met commercial operation conditions and is ready to go.

These two nuclear power units are expected to generate nearly 20 billion kilowatt-hours of electricityannually, which is the equivalence of a reduction of 6.24 million tons of standard coal consumption and 16.3 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions.

The completion of this project will greatly promote the optimization of China’s energy structure and expansion of green and low-carbon development.It will also help the country achieve its carbon peaking and neutrality goals.
