Lighting the Red Walls
Fire made things brighter for humans. And artificial lighting represents mastery of fire, a major breakthrough in the history of technology. Across the thousands of years of ancient Chinese history, lights evolved with the times and peaked in the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911).
The best manmade lighting utensils in the Qing Dynasty were in the imperial palace. In addition to night lighting, lamps were also used for decoration, sacrifice, and various other purposes. Outdoors, the lamps made the palace glow, forming glorious night views. Indoors, the palace lanterns matched the refined furniture, decorating rooms with a luxurious and grand style.
