In a village there once lived a shepherd riding on a camel. He was so poor that he did not even have a small cottage. Never had he been to school or learnt to read and write, for there were very few schools those days.
Poor and uneducated as he was, this shepherd was very wise. He understood peoples sorrows and trouble and helped them face their problems with positivity and courage. Many people came to him for advice. Soon he became famous for his wisdom and friendly nature.
The king of that country heard about him and thought of meeting him. Disguised as a shepherd and riding on a mule, the king came to the cave where the wise shepherd lived. The moment the shepherd saw the traveller coming towards the cave, he rose to welcome him. He led the tired traveller inside the cave, offered him some hot water and a share of his own meagre (貧乏的) meal. The king rested for the night in the cave and was deeply impressed by the shepherds hospitality and intelligent conversation. The next day, when the king was about to leave, the shepherd said, “Thank you, Your Majesty, for paying me the compliment of a visit.” Astonished, the king thought to himself, “He is indeed wise. I need people like him to serve me.” And the king appointed (任命) this humble shepherd as governor of a small district.
Although the shepherd rose to power and dignity (尊贵), he remained as humble as ever. His fame as a fair and wise governor soon spread throughout the country. Other governors grew terribly jealous (忌妒的) of him and began to talk to the king against him. They said, “He is very dishonest and keeps the tax from the people for himself.” They added, “You see, why did he always carry an iron chest (大箱子) with him? Perhaps it was the treasure he had secretly collected.”
At first the king did not pay attention to these reports, but how long could he ignore these governors and their endless stories about the shepherd? One thing was certain: the king discovered that the new governor did carry an iron chest with him all the time.

1. What would the king do to the shepherd?
2. How would the shepherd react to the kings questioning?
3. What treasure would be inside the iron chest?
1. Why did the shepherd put this treasure inside the iron chest and carry it with him all the time?
2. How would the king and other jealous governors feel when they saw the shepherds treasure?
3. What would happen to the shepherd in the end?
