People always say that good fortune follows those who live earnestly and with virtue. Prof. Dato’ Sri Dr. Mike Chan embodies this philosophy more so than others. From his years as a student studying hard for academic success, to his current position as a scientist, lecturer, and educator whose selfless work as Chairman of European Wellness Biomedical Group sees him meeting and treating patients from more than 80 countries/regions around the world, he has taken every opportunity in life with firm conviction.
At 61 years of age, alongside his wisdom, Mike Chan radiates an energetic and youthful energy — and he even looks young, with an impressively thick set of black hair. When asked about his background, he mentions his Chinese blood and heritage proudly. On his work in relation to China, he had this to say: “China still lags behind the foreign countries in the regenerative medicine and anti-aging field. It is my hope that I can help bring my knowledge and expertise on biomedical technology into China.”
His early years: achieving success through diligent study
Mike Chan is a third generation Chinese Malaysian, whose ancestors came to Malaysia from Fujian, China. He was born in Kuala Lumpur in 1961, when Malaysia had just been founded as a country and its economy was still in its infancy, making life challenging for many. His family was particularly destitute, and they lived in poverty. “During my childhood, I did not even have a single toy,” he reminisces about his time growing up.
In those days, Mike Chan recalls, he found warmth and happiness in the pile of books that were carefully arranged on his father’s bookshelf. Many days and nights were spent transporting himself into new worlds and towards greater horizons as he read through the collection of literature. Each book felt like a new experience to him. Having a strong interest in Chinese culture and history, Mike Chan also read a large number of books related to China, which has influenced his core beliefs and traditions to this day.“So far, our family still keeps the habit of celebrating our cultural heritage and taking part in events like the Spring Festival every year,” he muses.
The poor living conditions helped nourish Mike Chan’s strong and independent character — gradually, they made him realize that the only way out of poverty was through his studies, so he set out to change his own destiny. He excelled in his studies, consistently being recognized as a “straight-A student” in the eyes of teachers and other students. Since young, Mike Chan had always had a strong interest in life science, especially biological cells, so he chose cytology as his major in university.
After graduating, Mike Chan was eager to learn more cutting-edge and advanced biomedical knowledge, so he and his fiancée (now wife), Prof. Dato’ Sri Dr. Michelle Chan went to the UK for further studies.
In 1985, the couple set off from UK to travel around Europe. During their visit to Switzerland, they noticed that a local high-end medical institution was being patronized by wealthy clients from around the world — from Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Taiwan and many other places. Being curious, Mike Chain found through research that the institution was mainly engaged in the anti-aging business — a highly desirable commodity among the rich and powerful who were willing to spend a lot of money to maintain their youth.
Mike Chan continued his research by visiting six of the most prestigious medical wellness institutions in Switzerland and read a large number of books on the topic. He also consulted many biomedical experts to learn more about cell therapy, stem cells, cell regeneration and integration of these technologies into modern medicine. Through systematic learning, he found that diabetes, autism, Down syndrome and other diseases can be treated by biological cell therapy, which yielded remarkable results. This realization further strengthened his belief and commitment to the field of biological medicine.
In 1986, with a start-up fund of USD 10,000, Prof. Dato’ Sri Dr. Mike Chan and Prof. Dato’ Sri Dr. Michelle Chan established their biomedical company in Geneva, Switzerland. In their earliest days, he recalls, their office was rather spartan, furnished only with a table and two chairs. But this environment did not curb their entrepreneurial enthusiasm— before long, they had developed their own brand of sheep placental capsules and many other food supplements. Their products launched extremely successfully, with the sheep placental capsules in particular now being sold in more than 80 countries worldwide, leading to the growth and expansion of the couple’s biomedical empire.
To give is always better than to take
It was a personal tragedy that solidified Mike Chan’s decision in terms of his career path: the passing of his father-in-law. Suffering from heart disease, hypertension and other conditions, Mike Chan’s father-in-law needed to take long-term medicine all year round, which eventually led to severe renal failure. He urged the Malaysian local physicians who were treating his father-in-law at the time to use German and Swiss-based cellular therapy instead of contemporary British medicine, but as they were not trained in these fields, there was little they could actually do. His father-in- law suffered until his death.
His father-in-law’s death left a profound impact on Mike Chan, and he made a personal promise to himself to improve his knowledge of cell therapy so as to be able to help people recover from chronic conditions. Once again, he went on an excursion, visiting Germany, Switzerland, Austria and the former Soviet Union to learn the most cutting-edge knowledge of stem cells and immunology. At that time, he faced discrimination as a foreigner, and many companies did not recruit Asian employees in particular. But Mike Chan persevered, even going so far as to do unpaid labor and doing all the chores in order to convince his employers to take him in. After a period of travelling and studying, he had gained a more systematic understanding of stem cell technologies and biological laboratory science.
Mike Chan returned home to start his own line of medical wellness centers. His impressive knowledge and superb technique earned him a great reputation among his clients, to the point where celebrities from around the world including pop stars, royal family members and athletes would come to him for treatment. In his clinical practices, he found that in addition to general anti-aging effects, cellular therapy also displayed good therapeutic effects on many diseases that traditional therapies cannot cure, such as cerebral palsy, Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease.
According to Mike Chan, the core concept of cell therapy is to use cell regeneration technology to organize and repair dying cells so that they would work again, so as to change the metabolic rate of the human body. This cell-triggered repair process, tissue regeneration and proliferation, as well as tissue development cannot be achieved by other therapy methods. In the early 1990s, Mike Chan developed many products by using his medical technology, such as placental supplements, Swiss-based supplements and skin care products, Swiss and German parental drugs and therapeutics. By taking into account the special effects of each type of cellular therapy and the unique case of customers, Mike Chan and his team also provided patients with overall non-invasive solutions for “incurable”diseases such as skin diseases, autism, Parkinson’s disease, chronic kidney diseases and autoimmune diseases.
Today, the patients that Mike Chan treats come from all over the world. “Many of my patients or former patients still send me greeting cards on New Year’s, Christmas, or my birthday. These simple but meaningful gifts never fail to fill me with gratitude — these are the types of gifts that cannot be bought with money. As both a scientist and an entrepreneur, I believe that making money should not be the only pursuit. Money must be earned fairly. My ultimate goal is to save lives and improve people’s well-being. Because for every one of us, what matters is not just the length of life, but the quality of life. Let’s add quality life to longevity and not just years to our life. That is why it is important to treat others with sincerity, from the heart. To give is always better than to take!”he explained.
Hope to bring successful experiences to China
In order to promote cell therapy and allow the scientific data, research and achievements behind biological regenerative medicine to benefit more people, Mike Chan started to teach others and impart his knowledge. He founded schools and provided industry training, and extended the business into new areas of the regenerative medicine field. He and his wife founded the “European Wellness Center” in Europe, the “German European Wellness Institute”in Germany, the “LD Suisse Group”in Switzerland and a multinational Asia-Pacific hub in Malaysia. With the increasing range of product types and the expansion of their business scope, Mike Chan ensured that their business layout was also growing in an orderly manner.
Mike Chan also established specialized cell regeneration hospitals in Germany (Frankfurt), Switzerland(Lugano), Greece (Athens and Santorini), Malaysia, Thailand, and Hong Kong, China, as well as professional universities in the field of regenerative medicine in Switzerland (Lugano), the United States and Germany. Among them, the European Wellness Center has nearly 1000 employees, and its international biomedical, holistic and regenerative medicine diagnosis and treatment centers are located in Switzerland, Germany, Mainland China, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines, Vietnam, Cambodia, Pakistan, Bangladesh, the United Arab Emirates and other places.
Mike Chan continues to travel around the world for training and teaching. He has organized more than 1,000 speeches and symposiums in over 80 countries in the world, with the themes covering anti-aging, regenerative medicine and stem cell therapy, and was also invited to participate in a large number of international academic events.
Several years ago, European Wellness Biomedical Group worked with China’s Vitalake International Health Center, New Element International Medical Center and other institutions, and will establish multiple centers in Qingdao, Hangzhou, Yantai, Shenzhen, Beijing, Hainan and other places in the future. Thanks to the efforts of Mike Chain, Chinese consumers can enjoy the world’s top anti-aging, antidisease and anti-cancer life quality improvement services without going abroad.
Last June, European Wellness Biomedical Group signed a memorandum of understanding with China Lihua Biotechnology Co., Ltd., to establish a strategic alliance for scientific research and clinical trial development of fertility and immunity in Hunan, China. The later stages of the program will focus on providing education for Chinese researchers and local medical practitioners, especially about the professional disciplines of biological regeneration science, as well as clinical protocols and best practices in stem cell transplantation.
Moreover, in July last year, European Wellness Biomedical Group’s educational subsidiary European Wellness Academy signed a letter of intent with Zhifu Government of Yantai City, Shandong Province, China, with a total investment of RMB 100 million (USD 15.4 million) to build a world-class biological regenerative medicine education center for disease management and medical aesthetics in Yantai City.
“We sincerely hope to work with Chinese scientists to popularize stem cell therapy to more people and bring our clinical experiences into China through education, scientific research cooperation and other means. This can not only avoid the fatigue of travel, but also reduce the financial burden of patients. China’s production cost is low. If we can directly introduce technologies and products into China, we will certainly be able to benefit more and more people with cell therapy,” said Mike Chan.
Turning risk into opportunity test entrepreneurs’ ability
Mike Chan believes that China’s experience and methods of pandemic control should be praised. In his view, enhancing personal immunity is the natural way to protect against the virus. The immune system can protect the human body from harmful pathogens like bacteria and virus. He believes that in this special period, we must be more creative in order to turn the risks into opportunities. Under the “new normal”, we should learn to adapt and change.
Ultimately, Mike Chan believes that the health of one person is more important compared to the wealth of the entire world. Only by enhancing the immunity can we defeat the Covid-19 virus. It also happens that Mike Chan and his team are good at designing human immune system health solutions. In the past two years, they have jointly developed a series of health products to enhance the immune system.
“I am Chinese. My heart is always with China, and I always yearn to contribute or do something for China’s development,” said Mike Chan, adding that due to the pandemic, it has become very inconvenient for Chinese people to go abroad to receive regenerative medicine treatment. Therefore, he decided to bring decades of research and professional knowledge of regenerative medicine to China to provide quality services directly to the Chinese people.
Mike Chan repeatedly emphasized his expectations to play a pioneer role in China’s biomedical field. On one hand, he will provide theoretical training for relevant personnel; on the other hand, he will continue to do research in China. When talking about the long-term plans and goals, he hoped to further his career in China and work with the Chinese government and business partners to further develop biological regenerative medicine in the country.
