“色彩缤纷”的俗语

我们在学习英语的过程中，有时会遇到一些和颜色有关的俗语或习语。如果我们望文生义，只根据字面意思去理解，往往会闹出笑话。今天，我们就来学习几个和颜色有关的俗语吧！

in the red

该短语起源于20世纪20年代的美国。在会计学上，通常用红墨水记录债务，用黑墨水记录利润。in the red作为俗语，意为“有赤字，亏空，负债”。

例： Are we in the red this month？ 我们这个月出现了赤字吗？

That new company is already in the red. 新开的那家公司已经亏空了。

yellow-belly

belly有“腹部，肚子”的意思，但yellow-belly这一俗语和肚子毫无关联，它的意思是“胆小鬼、懦夫”。

例： Nick， you yellow-belly. That’s your own shadow. 尼克，你这胆小鬼。那是你自己的影子啊。

green with envy

该短语的意思是“嫉妒的，眼红的”。

例： He was green with envy at my success.他十分妒忌我的成就。

Every time you turn green with envy you are ripe for trouble.每次当你嫉妒时，你就要面临麻烦了。

the black sheep

牧羊人不喜欢黑绵羊，因为它们的毛不如白羊毛值钱，而且染不成白色。早期的牧羊人还认为黑羊会惊扰羊群里其他的羊只。市场行情、迷信加上偏见如此风行，以至于到了18世纪晚期，一些行为“出格”的人都被叫做“黑绵羊”。the black sheep作为俗语，意为“败家子，害群之马”。

例： His younger brother is the black sheep of the family. 他弟弟是他们家的败家子。

Tom is the black sheep in his class. 汤姆是他班上的害群之马。

in the pink

这一俗语意思为“非常健康，满面红光，容光焕发”。

例： A glass of red wine keeps you in the pink. 一杯红酒有益健康。

She felt in the pink only two weeks after the operation. 手术两周后，她就恢复了。

out of the blue

out of the blue与蓝色毫无关系，意思是“突然，出乎意料地”。

例： One of them wrote to us out of the blue several years later.

数年后，他们中的一人突然给我们写了一封信。

John arrived out of the blue. 约翰没有事先告知就来了。

white elephant

在泰国、缅甸等国白象（white elephant）被视为神圣不可侵犯的动物，人们从不会让它们劳作。据说，饲养一头“white elephant”花费惊人，国王对看不顺眼的大臣就赐给白象，使他为饲养御赐的白象而倾家荡产。white elephant这一俗语意思为“昂贵而无用之物”。

例： I’ll never buy a car， for it’s only a white elephant to me.

我决不买汽车，因为它对我只会是一个累赘。

The new office block has become an expensive white elephant.

这座新办公大楼成了昂贵的摆设。

in black and white

该短语意思为“白纸黑字，以书面形式”。

例： He gave me assurance in black and white.

他给了我书面保证。

A： Why don’t you go to school today， Nancy？

南希，今天你怎么没到校上课？

B： I have caught a bad cold， and I am not feeling in the pink.

我患了重感冒，感觉不舒服。

A： Oh， I’m sorry to hear that. I hope you’ll soon be in the pink again.
