People’s Tribune
Issue 10, 2021
Poverty is a chronic affliction and a prominent problem that plagues global development and governance. In April, the State Council Information Office released a white paper titled “Poverty Alleviation: China’s Experience and Contribution,” which showcases China’s achievement and contribution to this global issue. The scale and range of poverty in China were so immense and unique that it posed unimaginable difficulty in finding solutions. However, as of the end of 2020, China attained complete victory in its fight against extreme poverty, fully demonstrating its capability to actively participate in global governance to build a better world.
The United Nations has proposed to end poverty in all its forms and dimensions by 2030 in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. At present, with a population accounting for one fifth of the global total, China’s victory in eliminating extreme poverty has bolstered global confidence in poverty reduction and human development. Only by joint efforts of all countries can the world achieve poverty reduction for a better future.

At the Climate Ambition Summit held in December 2020, President Xi Jinping announced China’s detailed plan to cope with climate change by 2030: China will lower its carbon dioxide emissions per unit of GDP by over 65 percent from the 2005 level, increase the share of non-fossil fuels in primary energy consumption to around 25 percent, increase the forest stock volume by six billion cubic meters from the 2005 level, and bring its total installed capacity of wind and solar power to over 1.2 billion kilowatts.
Later, at the China Development Forum 2021, Yi Gang, governor of the People’s Bank of China, emphasized two urgent tasks under the goal of carbon neutrality. First, the financial system must be guided to provide necessary investment and financing support to related sectors in a marketoriented manner. Second, the financial market and monetary policy need timely assessment and improvement as climate change will affect the stability of finance.
China’s climate goals entail a transition of economic growth model, which means an evolutionary revolution for the finance industry that hooks on to the real economy.

On April 12, 2021, a special event themed “Heroic Hubei: Reborn for New Glories” was held at the Blue Hall of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, presenting Hubei, the Chinese province hardest hit by the novel coronavirus, to the rest of the world. About 500 people including diplomatic envoys to China, representatives of international organizations in China, Chinese and foreign businessmen, and the press attended the event.
State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi said that under the strong leadership of the CPC Central Committee with Comrade Xi Jinping at its core and the support pouring in from across the country, the people of Hubei stood united as one and fought a tenacious battle with the virus. Their enormous sacrifice not only made China’s victory over COVID-19 possible, but also contributed significantly to the global COVID response.
As an epitome of China’s efforts in fighting against the pandemic and promoting economic recovery, Hubei has reshaped itself and embraced openness and further development.
