For 92 years, Time Magazine has announced a Person of the Year each December. However, it has announced① the Kid of the Year for the first time.
Fifteen-year-old inventor Gitanjali Rao was chosen for this honor!
The idea this year was to show a kid between the ages of eight and sixteen that has done something influential. Among 5,000 kids, Rao came out on top, thanks to her inventions.
Gitanjali Rao, an Indian-American teen living in Colorado, is already famous for her inventions.
She has always been crazy about science and has won awards. Since she was very young, she decided to use technology to influence the world positively②. These are two of her most important inventions:
Tethys
At the age of ten, Rao learned that in Flint, Michigan, the drinking water was polluted with lead, a heavy metal that can make people ill. In the past, testing lead in water took a long time. She used carbon nanotube sensors to detects③ chemicals in water and developed a cheap device that connects to a smart phone and gives results at once!
Kindly
Knowing that teenagers sometimes lash out④ at each other, Rao developed an app that detects cyberbullying by examining words in text messages and online posts. Through this app, Rao wants students to be able to quickly detect and report cyberbullying, but also to know that what they are saying could be harmful so that they can rethink their words.
In the future, Rao hopes to improve on Tethys so that it can detect other substances⑤ in water. She also encourages other young people to become inventors through workshops where she teaches them how to “observe, brainstorm, research, build, and communicate.”
