Chollywood:A Rising Sun of Global Media World

Abstract:In this article,the arguments and examples are based on the thesis question whether Chollywood will become the dominant global media industries.And the thesis statement of this paper is that Chollywood will become the dominant global media industries,which means that China has the strong culture power and the ability to spread the power.There are three arguments and one counter argument in this essay to support the thesis statement according to Chollywood capital,Chollywood content and Chinese Wang Hong.

Speaking of Kung Fu Panda,what will come out of your mind?The cool Panda?The America action comedy?Paramount Pictures?Actually,the original idea of Kung Fu Panda was based on Chinese cultural elements,which are Kung Fu and Panda.And the genre of this movie is action comedy,which originated from Jackie Chan’movies.Although it is an American movie,we can observe Chinese culture power and Chinese potential of global media industries behind Kung Fu Panda.China has many valuable Intellectual properties which were made into different forms of contents by the global media companies,meanwhile,China also have the ability to use its own contents into cultural products and spread them to the global market.In other words,China has its own Chollywood.

Since China has the strong culture power and the ability to spread the power,here comes to the thesis question,will Chollywood become the dominant global media industries?Chollywood is Chinese multiple national media and entertainment industries,which includes film,TV,publishing,music,concerts,video games,advertising,theme parks and electronics.And the word“dominant”can be understood as an instrument of one nation-state’s economic,geopolitical,and cultural power over others on media and entertainment industries (Mirrlees,2013).Another definition is“global”,which is not only about the western countries,but also includes the countries all around the world.According to The Oxford English Dictionary,“global”means“of or relating to the whole world”.“Media”is the main means of,and products of,mass communication(Mirrlees,2013).

To start with,what should be worth mentioning firstly is Chollywood capital.In order to profit-maximize,media corporations try to gain as much control over markets as possible by establishing or reinforcing barriers to entry that aim to minimize competition.In their struggle to gain a competitive advantage over their rivals,media corporations compete to control tangible and intangible resources(Mirrlees,2013).Wanda Group is an exact example to support this idea.Wanda Group is a Chinese multinational real estate and entertainment conglomerate.Culture Industry Group is an essential part of Wanda Group,including film,kids place,travel and sports.Among them,Wanda Film Group have engaged most in the global market.Also,Tencent,one of the Internet giants in China,has begun to invest in the game,SNS and other entertainment fields from South Korea,India,Canada to The United States.And Tencent made a success in overseas game market,earning 18 billion dollars last year.The Daily users of its overseas game named Arena of Valor reached 13 million and total revenue of this game surpassed 1 million dollars.

Second of all,Chollywood content is another argument supporting the thesis statement.Jackie Chan,a typical representative of Chinese Kung Fu character,is a strong example in Chollywood content.Jackie Chan is one of the most recognizable and influential cinematic personalities in the world and he was awarded as an honorary Oscar for his extraordinary achievements in film.Appearing in over 130 movies,his worldwide box office is more than 5 billion dollars.Known for his unique action comedy genre,Jackie Chan also succeeded in Hollywood in 1990s and made several blockbusters like Rush Hour.Rush Hour made him a Hollywood star and after that he wrote his autobiography named I Am Jackie Chan.Jack Chan’s success in global film market did not stop in the 20 century,The Karata Kid in 2010 gained $176,591,618 box office and released in 3740 theaters and the character in the film showed an“American Dream”style.The legend of Jackie Chan is not only in the global film industry,but also lies in the global TV industry,he was made into a main character in the TV series named Jackie Chan Adventure.This TV series was the highest-rated TV program for viewers from the age of 2 to 11 years old and even distributed in more than 60 countries.Another case in point is Journey to the West,one of the Chinese four great classic novels,was made into different version of books,like American,German,Japan and Mongolian novels.What is more,the content of Journey to the West was made into TV series in different countries like Thailand,America and Australia.The key character in Journey to the West was the monkey named Sun Wukong,and it was used in global films,theme parks and video games.Thus,Chollywood content can be another strong argument for the thesis statement that Chollywood will be the dominant global media industries.

What is more,the success of Chinese Wang Hong can also be an argument for the thesis statement.A case in point is Ms.Yeah,a Chinese Wang Hong cooking office-food.Her antics-cooking spicy Sichuan skewers in an electric kettle,frying a pancake on a computer case,making buns from scratch in a standing steam iron–have catapulted her to international internet fame.Ms.Yeah is followed by 4.6 million fans on YouTube and 4.5 million fans on Facebook.Her fans are from Southeast Asia to Japan,Australia,New Zealand and the United States.Her Fans can always find some creative office-food making methods through her short videos on YouTube and Facebook.And they always leave words of encouragement and comments,mostly in English,marveling at her latest creations.Ms.Yeah’s popularity overseas can be attributed to her use of the universally understood emoji and no language in her videos,making her videos far more accessible to a global audience.Another Chinese Wang Hong,Papi Jiang,the comedy video blogger,also has the fame in the global social media.Her videos always hit the global topic and some of her contents are made into Japanese version.Chinese Wang Hong are not only focusing on domestic market,but also targeting the global social media market by launching business on YouTube and Facebook.

All in all,considering what has been discussed above,it is reasonable to conclude that Chollywood will be the dominant global media industries.In the past,Hollywood made many achievements in the global media fields and had great influences to the global market and many countries tended to imitate the Hollywood style and tried to engage in the Hollywood world.But now they have their own contents and ability to run their own media industries through the effective network to produce and distribute the cultural products,so there comes Chollywood,Bollywood,Dollywood and Nollywood,which made some influences to the global media market.So it is essential to rethink the structure of global media industries in the new technological context.As is mentioned above,the dominance of Chollywood on the global media industries results in the capital,content and Wang Hong,and Chollywood is becoming the considerable culture power and have influences not only on the Asian market,but also on the western media market.And China owns the biggest amount of audiences of the global media industries,which makes it necessary for the global media producers to study the audience’s taste from China and study Chollywood culture.
