Parcel Delivery

Beijing Youth Daily December 9

Chinas package delivery sector has set a new record by handling more than 100 billion parcels this year as of December 9, ranking top in the world for the eighth consecutive year, compared with 83.3 billion for all of last year, according to the industrys regulator.

Thanks to e-commerce, Chinas parcel delivery business has boomed in the past decade. The country has established a delivery network extending to rural and urban areas across the country and connecting with the world, serving nearly 700 million users a day.

Nevertheless, there is still room for improvement. To attract more customers by offering lower prices, some companies have cut couriers salaries to reduce costs, dealing a blow to both delivery peoples rights and the development of the industry by large.

In the future, e-commerce enterprises will have to safeguard a sustainable market order, not get caught in the sectors rat race and better protect couriers legal rights. Delivery companies should establish a more complete evaluation system and provide incentives based on employee career development and professional growth.

Young Mental Health

China Newsweek December 13

According to the State of the Worlds Children 2021 report released by UNICEF, suicide is the fourth leading cause of death among 15- to 19-year-olds. Every year, almost 46,000 children between the ages of 10 and 19 end their own lives—about one every 11 minutes. China shares similar challenges among its youngsters.

Mental health problems have mainly been a side effect of Chinas rapid industrialization and urbanization, Zheng Yi, a professor with Beijing Anding Hospital affiliated to Capital Medical University, told China Newsweek, adding that an unbalanced growth pattern has entailed challenges such as limited activity space, housing problems and the phenomenon of the nations left-behind children.

A study co-authored by Zheng found that 17.5 percent of mental disorders occur among Chinese schoolgoing children and teenagers aged 6 to 16.

A report on Chinese mental health (2019-20) released by the Chinese Academy of Sciences in March demonstrated that the detected rate of depression among Chinese adolescents stood at 24.6 percent, including 17.2 percent suffering from mild depression and 7.4 percent dealing with a severe form thereof.

As for the protection of young psychological wellbeing, Zheng believes parents should take on a key role. In addition, better understanding and support from their peers and communities, access to professional medical services, and cross-sector cooperation are all effective means to help young people foster a stronger coping mechanism.

Industrial Heritage

Economic Daily December 13

Instead of roaring machines and a bustling work floor, today, groups of tourists gather inside the old factory of Shougang Industrial Park to revisit memories of the industrial age.

The park is not only home to the organizing committee of the Olympic Winter Games Beijing 2022, but also harbors the Big Air Olympic snowboarding venue. In fact, a number of cities have been eyeing the creation of cultural parks, leisure and tourism areas plus patriotic-themed bases by revamping their own out-of-use factories.

The State Council recently approved a blueprint for the revitalization and development of areas with special characteristics, including old industrial cities with practical heritage.

Their legacy does not merely consist of cold steel and masonry; it carries within the dedicated spirit and ideals of generations. As an important conduit of industrial culture, it has recorded the most essential data of the various stages in Chinas industrial development, and witnessed the evolution of the country and its industries alike.

In the long run, the development and utilization of industrial heritage should not be separated from innovation and creativity.
