Takeuchi Ryo is a Japanese documentary director living in Nanjing, China.

He was attached to China by shooting a documentary about the country for NHK, and finally decided to move to Nanjing. His works usually focus on the daily life of ordinary people.

The Reason I Live Here(2015) has got more than 600 million views on online video platforms;Long Time No See, Wuhan(2020)andNanjing’s Anti-epidemic Scene(2020) have shown the world how China has responded to the sudden outbreak of COVID-19.

A Place to Call Home

Some people fall in love with a city because they met someone special there. But Takeuchi take things a step further. He grows fond of Nanjing because this is the place he calls home.

When he was shooting a documentary in 2004, Takeuchi met and fell in love with a Chinese girl named Zhao Ping. A year later, they got married in Japan.

Takeuchi has taken a great interest in China since then. In 2013, driven by a fervent will to shoot a documentary about the country, he decided to quit his job in Japan and move with his family to Nanjing where Zhao’s parents were living. Currently, they are a family of six, including two adorable children. His Chinese was spotty when he came to Nanjing five years ago.But now, he can speak the language fluently in daily life and at work.

A Bridge of Communication

From 2004 to 2007, Takeuchi began filming TV documentaries about China as a director, includingA Young Female College Graduate Serving As A Village Officialand other TV documentaries.

From 2010 to 2011, he traveled along the Yangtze River from the river sources in Qinghai and Yunnan to the estuary in Shanghai. He was amazed at the diverse landscapes along the way.Nanjing is a perfect mix of nature and city. He said, ”Although located in the most prosperous area in China, Nanjing is less busy than Shanghai. Life here is relatively slow and relax. And it’s a wonderful city to live.” Finally, he decided that settling down in Nanjing was the best thing to do.

Two years after he came to China, he and his wife, together with their friend Tsuyoshi Abe, started to shoot the documentary,The Reason I Live Here. He likes to record the daily lives of ordinary people in Nanjing. You can find people eat, chat, go to school or work, and enjoy leisure time in his videos. As he said, people in his videos show true thoughts and feelings, and each of them is unique.

In February 2020, the COVID-19 epidemic went from bad to worse, but the young people in Japan did not take it seriously. To draw more Japanese attention to the disease, Takeuchi filmedNanjing’s Anti-epidemic Scene.

A 10-minute video that records the daily lives and work of locals amid the outbreak. The documentary made a splash in both Japan and China. Since its advent on March 2, many Japanese TV stations have spotlighted the documentary and invited Takeuchi to tell how Chinese people fought the epidemic. In China, it was covered by mainstream media including the Weibo account of the Central Committee of the Communist Young League, and got tens of millions of views.

As the epidemic rampaged through the West, Takeuchi and his team subtitled the documentary in English and posted it on YouTube on March 15. It soon went viral among foreign people.

The documentary tells true stories of Nanjing’s fight against the epidemic: people had their temperature taken and cleaned their hands with hand sanitizer before entering a community; foods were delivered with zero contact; traveling information was registered with mobile apps; students attended school from home.

He said, “The best thing I can do is make a decent documentary and let more and more Japanese people know China for what it is.” Having witnessed all of these anti-epidemic efforts, he was impressed by the solidarity of people in Nanjing.

A Growing City in a Country amid Changes

If Takeuchi spent a life in his hometown, like his parents had,he would have been a nobody. But to everyone’s surprise, he came to China and became a national sensation.

“China is an amazing country,” said Takeuchi in all sincerity.Intensely curious and enthusiastic about life, he is excited about the rapid changes in China.”Nanjing enjoys a long history, fascinating foods and a rich culture. And it’s growing dynamically…Nanjing has the most breathtaking landscapes. I can’t get enough of its mountains and waters. There are also a lot of delicious foods here. I like the duck blood and vermicelli soup very much...What I love most about the city is its friendly and tolerant people.”

Those are the reasons Takeuchi lives in Nanjing.

He is wasting no time filming more documentaries about the cultures and societies of China and Japan, hoping that both countries can understand each other better and bring COVID-19 to heel to gether. Come that day, he believes, everything will be fine.
