There is a very special place in the middle of the Pacific Ocean—Easter Island. The island is very small. It is only 117 square kilometers. There are few people living on it. But it is still important for a very old reason, with a history going back more than 1,000 years.
All over the Easter Island, there are large statues, called megaliths (巨石像). The ancient people of Polynesia between 800 and 1,600 AD build them. They are in the shape of large heads with big noses and ears. There are more than 800 of these megaliths, and some of them are more than 10 meters tall. Many of them rest upon tombs (墓穴).
