Considering it was competing against mega blockbusters like Star Wars： The Rise of Skywalker， this is an incredible turn out. Plus， with its budget only sitting at $40million （￡30.5million） this is a real result for the filmmakers. This means， worldwide， the movie has made a profit of $40million （￡30.5million）. In the USA alone， Little Women has made $60.1million （￡45.8million） since its release on Christmas Day. In other international markets， including the UK， the film has made $20.4million （￡15.6million） which is pretty impressive.

Given this story is one steeped in American history， it is no surprise the film has performed better in American markets.

The film came out a day earlier in the USA compared to the UK， with British fans getting the chance to see it on Boxing Day.

Who is in the cast of Little Women？

Starring as Jo March is Saoirse Ronan， the Irish actress who starred in Gerwig's debut film， Ladybird. She is joined by her Ladybird co-star Timothee Chalamet， who plays Laurie. Jo's sisters Meg， Amy and Beth are played by Emma Watson， Florence Pugh and Eliza Scanlen respectively.

Marmee， the girls' mother， is played by Laura Dern， and their father is played by Bob Odenkirk.

Meryl Streep plays their Aunt March， while James Norton plays Mr Brooke and Louis Garrel is Professor Bhaer， Jo's suitor. Additionally， Tracy Letts， Chris Cooper and Jayne Houdyshell play Jo's newspaper editor， Mr Lawrence and the March's maid Hannah.

The film follows Jo， who is considered a version of the book's author， Louisa May Alcott， as she grows up with her three sisters， mother and maid while her father fights in the Civil War.

The group get into some real scrapes （困境）， but generally the story shows their domestic life as they grow from children to women， and are forced to deal with the pressures that entails. For Jo， she also has the added struggle of being a type of breadwinner for her family， as she bucks the gender trends to write her novels and gain some income for her family. However， Jo is also shrugging off the romantic advances of her childhood friend， and the confusion of living with such differing characters in her family.
