One of the modern worlds most important inventions was created in March, 1989. A British computer scientist named Tim Berners-Lee changed everything by 11 the World Wide Web. Now, most people use the words internet and web as if theyre the same thing. But the internet is much 12 than the web, and theyre two different things. The internet 13 in the early 1970s by Vint Cerf and Bob Kahn. It is basically a huge network made up of smaller networks of computers 14 send packets of information to other computers. When this information is in the form of web pages, thats the World Wide Web.
In 1989, when Tim Berners-Lee was working at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN, 欧洲核子研究组织) in Switzerland, the internet already existed. But it was nothing like it is now 15 there were no web pages.
E-mail also already existed. 16 tool that already existed was hypertext (超文本) to jump from one document (文件) to another. But, without the web, none of it was as useful as it is now.
Berners-Lee got very 17 at CERN because all of the scientists had different kinds of computers. You could connect the computers 18 cables (電缆), but they couldnt “speak” to each other. If you wanted information, you had to know 19 which computer that information was on and sit down in front of it and log in. Berners-Lee suggested 20 way of putting the internet, domain names (域名) and hypertext together into one system. This “imaginary information system which everyone can read” was later called the World Wide Web. Two years later, in 1991, the worlds first website was built at CERN: http://info.cern.ch.

By now, most people know they should be eating more vegetables. But are there ways to get more from the vegetables you eat? A research shows that when it comes to vegetables, it means not only how much we eat, but also how we prepare them—it decides the vitamins (维生素) and other nutrients (营养物) that enter our body.
Many studies show that people who eat lots of vegetables have less heart disease, and eye problems and even cancer. But raw (生的) vegetables are not always best. The researchers found that 198 Germans who eat raw food were short of lycopene (番茄红素), which was found in tomatoes and other red vegetables. Steven K. Clinton, a professor at Ohio State University says, “For fruits and vegetables, sometimes a little bit of cooking can be helpful.”
Many facts decide how the vegetables do good to peoples health before they reach the table, including where they were grown and how they were stored before being bought. Some nutrients are easily lost in cooking if they are cooked in different ways.
Vitamins C and B are often lost. In January, another report said that boiling (煮) was better for carrots than frying (油炸) or serving them raw. Frying was the worst way to cook.
What were cooked with the vegetables can also be important. When the vegetables were cooked with fat, people can get more nutrients. Fat can also make the taste of vegetables better, so people will eat more of them. If we put on some other things like a little salt, we can make the food taste better.
( )21. The writer mainly wants to tell us that the way people eat vegetables is important.
( )22. The people who eat the raw vegetables for a long time will have heart disease.
( )23. Lycopene is rich in boiled vegetables.
( )24. The price at which the vegetables are sold decides how the vegetables do good to people.
( )25. The vegetables cooked with fat will be more delicious.

Levi Strauss was born in Germany in the mid 1800s and emigrated (移居) to the United States as a young man. He lived in New York City and learned the dry-goods business for several years. In 1853 he took his knowledge and his dreams to San Francisco (California, USA). His dream to succeed came true over the next 20 years as he became a very successful businessman.
Many of Levi Strauss customers were cowboys and miners. They needed clothing that was strong and durable. Strauss found a special fabric(布料) from France that was comfortable and lasted a long time. It was called “serge de Nimes” which was later shortened to the word denim (粗棉布).
Another man named Jacob Davis bought large amounts of the denim fabric from Levi Strauss. He was a tailor who made pants for hard-working men. One of his customers was continually tearing the pockets off his pants. So Jacob Davis decided to put rivets (鉚钉) on certain parts of the pants to make them stronger. The customer loved the new pants so much that he told all his friends, and soon Jacob Davis was busy making lots of pants with rivets.

Living and dealing with kids can be a tough (艰难的) job these days, but living and dealing with parents can be even tougher. If I have learned anything in my 16 years, it is that communication is very important, both when you disagree and when you get along. With any relationship, you need to let other person know how you are feeling. If you are not able to communicate, you will be alone. When you are mad at your parents, or anyone else, not talking to them doesnt solve anything.
Communication begins with the concerns (关心) of another. For example, you cant just come home from school, and go up to your room without saying hello to everyone. Even if you just say “Hi”, and see how their days were for five minutes, it is better than nothing. If you look up the word “communication” in a dictionary, it will say “the exchange of ideas, the expression of information” and “the means of communication: a letter or a message”.
To remain a good relationship, you must keep communication strong. Let people know how you feel, even if its just by writing a note. When dealing with parents, you always have to make them feel good about how they are doing as parents. If you are tryings to make them see something as you see it, tell them that youll listen to what they have to say, but ask them politely to listen to you. Yelling (喊叫) or walking away only makes things worse.
Communication isnt a one-way deal: It goes both ways. Just remember: Tell the other people how you feel, and listening is the key factor to communication.

When we are reading, we often see one or two graphics in a text. Have you ever thought about these questions: Why are they there? What information do they give? 41. 它们有助于我们的阅读和理解吗?
Graphics are things like pictures, maps, charts and tables. 42. 它们提供信息给读者。Very often, we can see different kinds of graphics in books, magazines and newspapers. Writers use graphics to get the readers attention and give them some particular (特别的) information. Graphics help to understand the given information in a text. And graphics put the information in a particular order so that its easy to understand when we take a quick look.
43. It is not always true that a picture is worth a thousand words. But many things are easier to show than to tell and they may also be easier to understand. Graphics are just the right things that give a great deal of information 44. 但阅读和理解并不需要花太多时间。
The right way to read and understand a graphic is to look at the picture and the words together. In a graphic, only a few words are used to explain what the picture shows you. 45. Sometimes, numbers and percentages (百分比) are also given to go with the words to explain things.
Now look at the graphic on the right. It is how a researcher used a graphic to show the number of hours spent sleeping by British teenagers each day. Can you understand it?

B)簡答 阅读下面短文,然后根据短文内容简要回答下列问题。(共5小题,每小题2分)
If your home is like most others, youve probably got a recycling (回收) bin in your kitchen. Good for you. Thats the first step to recycling. But there are other things that both parents and kids can do to make recycling work better.
First, what kinds of rubbish bins are in the other rooms of your house? What about in your bedroom? Youve probably just got one rubbish bin where everything goes. But its a good idea to place a special bin for recycling paper. Then when it goes full, you can empty it into a larger recycling bin in the kitchen. You can also put a small recycling bin in the bathroom for any useless paper there.
Before you throw an item into the recycling bin, stop and think if you can use that item again. Take plastic items with yoghurt, for example. After eating whats in them, you can clean them and store them in a cupboard, and later you can use them for storing another food item. You can do the same with the glass jars, too. You can also share your recycling advice with your neighbors.
If you decide to put an item in the recycling bin, its very important to follow this method. If it has food or drink in it, you must clean it before you put it in the recycling bin. It cant be recycled with food still in it. You should place the item under the running water for a few seconds to clean it. This saves time for the workers in the recycling center. Then they can use their time doing more important work.
The last thing to remember is—dont give up!Recycling is a whole life task and you mustnt just do recycling for a month and then return to your old habits. You can also continue to find other ways to recycle. So make recycling your new habit, and get others involved as well!
46. Where can you put a small recycling bin for any useless paper?
47. What should you do before you throw an item into the recycling bin?
48. Why must you clean the item before you put it in the recycling bin?
49. How long shall we have the habit of recycling?
