According to the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, China has made steady progress in protecting the ecology and environment. Although quite a few difficulties and challenges remain, China is moving in the right direction on pollution control.
The national conference on environmental protection held on May 18 and 19, 2018 in Beijing outlined China's toughest measures yet against air, water and soil pollution. To achieve this goal, the Chinese government has taken specific measures including China's Environmental Protection Tax Law that took effect in 2018. The environmental tax was China's first tax clearly designed for environmental protection. Moreover, China began to enact the newly revised Water Pollution Prevention and Control Law in 2018, which includes expanding the river chief system to cover the entire country after a successful regional pilot program.
