Shaking hands would seem to be a polite way to greet someone, and yes,it often is.However, when in Russia,do not offer to shake hands in a doorway. It's said that the“house spirit”lives in a home's doorway, and crossing over it for a greeting would be bad luck.
When in India, avoid eating with your left hand, because the left hand is seen as disgusting,as it's normally used for wiping in the bathroom. The same is true for countries in the Middle East and parts of Africa. On the other hand, there are some rude manners that are actually polite in other countries.
But guess what?If you're in Great Britain, the left is important—you should only pass the port in that direction.Passing the dessert wine to the right is considered as bad manners. So is forgetting to pass the port. But don't worry. If you do forget to pass the port, the person who's waiting for it may remind you,“You know the Bishop of Norwich? He's a good man, except he always forgets to pass the port.”
avoid/ə΄vɔɪd/v.
disgusting/dɪs΄gʌstɪŋ/adj.
wipe/waɪp/v.
the Middle East中东
port/pɔrt/n.
remind/rɪ΄maɪnd/v.
1.It's said that the“house spirit”lives in a home's doorway,and crossing over it for a greeting would be bad luck.
It's said that...
2.On the other hand, there are some rude manners that are actually polite in other countries.(然而)在另一方面,一些被认为是粗鲁的行为在其他国家竟然是有礼貌的。
该句是包含定语从句的复合句,that are actually polite in other countries是由that引导的定语从句,修饰先行词some rude manners;on the other hand为固定短语,意为“在另一方面”;actually为副词,意为“竟然(表示惊讶)”。
3.Passing the dessert wine to the right is considered as bad manners. So is forgetting to pass the port.
forgetting to pass the port是动名词短语,在句中作主语。
