Ethnic Image Records
China Weekly
Issue No. 1, 2019
Four decades are but the blink of an eye in human history, but for the various ethnic groups in China, the last 40 years have seen immense changes. Skyscrapers rose out of the once deserted riverbanks, and the monotonous skyline began to be decorated with streaks and streams of glowing neon in the night. Ethnic Image Records uses slices of life to reinvigorate the memory, and assemble village stories into history, thus recording a colorful history of reform and opening-up.
Chinas ethnic minorities are widely distributed; most of these areas are strewn with mountains, plateaus, forests, and pastoral areas with abundant resources. The ecological environment is complex and varied. Due to natural and historical reasons, these regions were relatively economically backward and the market mechanisms far from perfect.
Over the past 40 years, the state has formulated a series of targeted policies for ethnic minority areas, and has given them great assistance in terms of capital, technology, and talents. These measures have greatly stimulated the enthusiasm for creating wealth, innovation, and entrepreneurship. The market mechanism and the law of value have also seeped into every micro-unit of the social economy, laying a solid foundation for the rapid economic development of ethnic regions.
People all over the country have truly felt the fruitful results of reform and opening-up. As members of the Chinese nation, ethnic minorities have also undergone earth-shaking changes in economic, political, social, and cultural aspects along with the progress of the national environment. They enjoy the same level of material and cultural progress as the Han people.

More importantly, a group of new Internet companies have been founded and grown in Shanghai and have completed the process of market access and development of business models.
On the list of Top 100 Chinese Internet Companies in 2018, jointly released by the Internet Society of China and the Information Center of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, were 21 Shanghai-based Internet companies such as Wangsu, Ctrip, and Bilibili. These enterprises cover aspects of clothing, food, housing, travel, entertainment, and education.
As Chinas financial center, Shanghai is one of the most active cities for venture capital in China. Even in the first half of 2016, which was known as “capital winter,” there were 344 investment and financing events in Shanghais pan-Internet sector.
However, in the eyes of Shanghai policy-makers, the city cant just consider transplanting the towering tree that has grown into its garden. How to cultivate small trees into big trees is the proposition that Shanghai is trying to solve.

At present, the world is ushering in a new round of scientific and technological revolution and industrial transformation. The booming informationization is driving the development of digital, network, and intelligent development in all areas of the economy and society, including the financial industry.
Fintech is playing an active role in serving the real economy, promoting inclusive finance, improving financial risk management, and promoting structural reforms in the financial supply side. Among them, four core technologies, namely AI, blockchain, cloud computing, and big data (collectively ABCD) is the main driving force for the vigorous development of fintech.
The boundaries between new technologies such as ABCD are steadily weakening, and these technologies are becoming more closely integrated in application. The integration trend will push fintech into a new stage of development.
While promoting the transformation of the financial industry, fintech often brings risks and and faces security challenges in the aspects of business, technology, networks, and data. Financial supervision needs to follow up in a timely manner, and even plan ahead to avoid complications.
