Recycling Of NEV Used Power Battery Taking Shape
Used power battery is rich in valuable metals like lithium, nickel and cobalt. Recycling of used power battery means a lot to resource recycling. In order to raise comprehensive utilization level of used power battery, MIIT released Industrial Norms for Comprehensive Utilization of NEV Used Power Battery and implemented interim measures for announcement management. The Norms is dedicated to actively cultivating industrial backbone companies and supporting companies in developing recycling technologies and process. Currently, a few companies, led by Hubei Gem and Hunan Brunp, have taken shape in recycling capability.
Hubei Gem established smart nondestructive dismantling line of used power battery. With the process of newly-developed “liquid-phase synthesis and high temperature synthesis”, its spherical cobalt powder can be applied directly to the manufacturing of battery cathode material.
Hunan Brunp developed power battery module and monomer automatic dismantling equipment.
Its process of “directional circulation and converse product positioning” can produce lithium nickel cobalt manganese oxide and battery-level cobaltosic oxide.
Zhejiang Huayou Cobalt Co,. Ltd. established used-lithium-battery-recycling production line that is capable of dismantling battery pack, monomer crushing classification and wet purification and so on.
Guangdong Guanghua Tech has complete recycling production line. It also has developed technologies like multi-level series synergy complex extraction purification and BMED, dedicated to recycling multiple valuable metals with eco-friendly process.
Beijing Saidemei Company developed electrolyte and diaphragm dismantling recycling process that can dismantle shell, electrolyte, diaphragm, waste cathode powder and waste anode powder. Through material repairing process, the technology can re-generate cathode and anode materials.
Jiangxi Highpower Company put lithium battery recycling project into operation. The project is equipped with perfect hazard-free used battery disposal equipment and process and applies advanced eco-friendly process and equipment to recycle used battery.
Currently, the quantity of used power battery is very small. Those used power batteries for enterprises to recycle mainly come from defective goods from battery manufacturers during their R&D and manufacturing, and retired battery from “NEV Initiative” project. Recycling technologies for used power battery center on hydrometallurgy and physical remediation. Hydrometallurgy can help to achieve 98% comprehensive recovery rate in nickel, cobalt and manganese. As a whole, recycling technologies are relatively mature but technologies and equipment for efficient extraction of valuable metal are still in need of improvement, so is governance on pollution caused by used power battery dismantling. Lithium iron phosphate battery recycling is faced with the problem of poor economic efficiency.
In the near future, MIIT is going to make full use of industrial basis of scrap cars, electric product dismantling and non-ferrous metal, to make overall deployment in power battery recycling companies to promote sustainable development.
