While I was on my way to Walmart, I was greeted by an elder woman who was working at the door as a greeter. I had a return to make so she stopped me and asked to tag my bag. Usually I would have gotten annoyed because I know I dont steal, so why does my bag need to be tagged? Id just witnessed someone ahead of me being not so nice, and treating the lady like she was a nobody. I could see this lady looked to be at retirement age, trying to make ends meet. The look on her face and the energy she gave was that of someone afraid and not knowing where they stood in life. Not to mention the person ahead of me whod just snatched (夺) a bag back from her and stormed off without even saying thank you. I could tell this woman was hurt by that, and no one knew how many people had been treating her that way all day long.

What if she was a grandmother whod recently taken care of her grandchildren for whatever season? What if her husband she had to support recently fell sick and they couldnt afford the medical expenses, so she had to go back to work? What if she just lost everything she had in her retirement and now she had to go back to work?

All she wants is to do her job and do it well. All she wants is to serve customers the way she was trained. All she needs is to be appreciated. Can I be that someone she needs, just for the moment?

I looked her in her eyes as she scanned my bag, smiled and said, “Your hair is beautiful and fits you well!” Her face lit up and she smiled back and began to tell me how much easier it was to manage. It was salt-and-pepper hair and was cut in the prettiest style. She handed my bag back, smiled and told me the service desk was straight down to my left. I said, “Thank you!”

One of the most important things in the world is friendship. In order to have friends, you have to be a friend. But how can you be a good friend at school?

Listen—Listen when your friends are talking. Dont say anything unless they ask you a question. Sometimes its not necessary for you to have anything to say; they just need someone to talk to about their feelings.

Help them—If your friends are ever in need of something, be there to help them. You should try to put them first, but make sure you dont do everything they want you to do. Try to take an extra pencil or pen with you to classes in case they forget one. Have a little extra money in your pocket in case they forget something they need.

Be there for them—Be there for your friends to make them feel better in hard times. Marilyn Monroe, a famous US actor, once said,“I often make mistakes. Sometimes I am out of control, but if you cant stay with me at my worst, you are sure not to deserve to be with me at my best.” Always remember this! If you dont want to stay with your friends when theyre in hard times, then you dont deserve to be with them when theyre having a good time!

___ Try to make plans with your friends. Go shopping, go for ice cream, have a party, go to the movies and so on. Take time to know each other even better by doing something you both enjoy. By planning things together, you both can have a good time. And youll remember these things when youre all old!

8. If you want to help your friends, you should ___ .

B. A friend is easier lost than found.

C. A friend in need is a friend indeed.

D. A man is known by his friends.

10. Which of the following can be put in the blank of the last paragraph?

A. Enjoy yourself. B. Make plans.

C. Understand your friends. D. Play with your friends.

11. Whats the text mainly about?

A. How to be a good friend.

Rome—Doctors and medical groups around the world last weekend reacted with strong opposition to the news that an Italian specialist is on the brink of cloning the first human baby.

Dr Severino Antinori, who is the head of a hospital in Rome, has been referred to in an Arab newspaper as claiming that one of his patients is eight weeks pregnant with a cloned baby.

Antinori refused to comment on the reports, but he said he hoped to produce a cloned embryo (卵) for implantation (植入) within two years. So far seven different kinds of mammals have already successfully cloned, including sheep, cats and most recently rabbits.

Doctors showed their doubt and were strongly opposed although they admitted that human cloning would finally come true unless there was a worldwide ban on the practice.

Professor Rudolf Jaeniscb of the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology said, “I find it astonishing that people do this where the result can be predicted that it will not be a normal baby. It is using humans as Guinea pigs. It makes people feel sick.”

But Ronald Green, director of the Ethics Institute at Dartmouth College in the US, said it was unlikely that an eight-week-old pregnancy would lead to a birth.

So far all cloned animals have suffered from some different serious disorders, many of them dying soon after their births.

Doctors are opposed to human cloning because they are worried about the welfare of the cloned child if there is one.

“There are no benefits of cloned human beings, just harm,” said Dr Michael Wilks of the UK.

14. What can we learn about the cloned animals?

A. They are active.

B. They are born unhealthy.

C. They live a relatively long life.

D. They have a different charactor from the normal.

15. What is the best title for the passage?

A. The Success of Human Cloning

A major source of teen stress is school exams, and test anxiety is not uncommon. When you recognize your teen is under stress, how can parents help your teen stay calm before an exam?

Be involved. Parents need to be involved in their teens work. 1 What they look for is your presence—to talk, to cry, or simply to sit with them quietly. Communicate openly with your teen. Encourage your teen to express his worries and fears, but dont let him focus on those fears.

Help them get organized. 2 Together, you and your teen can work out a timetable in which he can study for what he knows will be on the test.

Provide a calm setting. Help your teen set up a quiet place to study and protect his privacy. Give him a nutritious diet. It is important for your teen to eat a healthy, balanced diet during exam times to focus and do his best. 3 If this happens, encourage your teen to eat light meals or sandwiches. A healthy diet, rather than junk food, is best for reducing stress.

4 Persuade your teen to get some sleep and/or do something active when he needs a real break from studying. Making time for relaxation, fun, and exercise is important in reducing stress. Help your teen balance his time so that he will feel comfortable taking time out from studying to spend time with friends or rest.

Show a positive attitude. 5 Your panic, anxiety and blame contribute to your teens pressure. Make your teen feel accepted and valued for his efforts. Most importantly, reassure your teen that things will be all right, no matter what the results are.

A. Encourage your teen to relax.

B. The best thing is simply to listen.

C. They will only make the situation worse.

D. Parents attitude will influence their teens emotions.

E. Exam stress can make some teens want to eat nothing.

F. Your teen may also make negative comments about himself.

G. Help your teen think about what he has to study and plan accordingly.
