It‘s shortly after ten but my frozen mobile shows six hours less. This is the time at home. Cruel. The plane just landed in the capital of Chinese province Zhejiang Hangzhou. "Dont you travel to Zhejiang Media Cooperation and Communication Forum?", one of my fellow-travellers asked me. "Of course, I do!" And so we were two. In few hours we would be more than one hundred. And because each meeting and each communication was about people, I will focus the following lines just on them.
I knew a bit what was lying ahead of me. This was my second time in the same province this year. In the first trip, I visited cities of resounding names such as Hangzhou, Ningbo or Yiwu thanks to the co-operation of our newspaper with the Chinese paper Guangming Daily. During this trip, I met their representatives the very first day while most of the participants had a day off. We planned our next year co-operation. I was glad to see the well-known faces again and two years after signing the memorandum I dare to call them even friends.
A day after the conference Zhejiang Media Cooperation and Communication Forum with International Friendship Cities about media co-operation among countries of the whole world I was really looking forward to the water town Wuzhen. It‘s romantic and reminds the European Venice a bit. "But our is nicer," I was told by a Chinese colleague in spring. I am not entitled to judge, but I would say it is different. Different by its architecture and atmosphere. What is not different are the crowds of tourists in the little narrow streets. That is why we got on board to see those beautiful buildings from one of the boats which were sailing through the local channels and were grateful target of photographers. I was happy, the previous visit did not include a boat sailing. On top of that I was surprised when I heard from my guide: "You must have been here, I remember you". Really, that was the same person who had guided us when I was here in spring. Admirable memory. I gave her a present in memory, a magnetic picture of our capital city Prague and told myself that she would be another person I would always remember when thinking of China.
However, it wasnt just Wuzhen I looked forward to and was fascinated by its incredibly tastefully renovated historical hotel. One of places that, so to say, got under my skin (thanks to my love to history) was Liangzhu archaeological museum in Hangzhou, which I also visited fot the second time this year. Just for the record, I finished our supplement dedicated to the province Zhejiang by the article about five-thousand-year-long history of the so called “First Town of China". It was published in the beginning of June and the last sentence of the article was: "I believe that a report about new accession to the list of world heritage will soon appear in the world media.“ It happened so on 7th July. Congratulations, Liangzhu, I was touched.
Chinese high-speed trains are one of the best transport means I could have ever known. Travelling by them is fast, comfortable and safe. On top of that it enabled us to see even more from China. Students from Zhejiang International Studies University who took care of us during the whole event, gathered in the train corridor and started to sing an old folk song about West Lake. It was beautiful and two girls were parting with me giving me a hug. One of them expressed her wish to start dancing (classical dance is one of my hobbies) and I knew that I would remember her while dancing tango on the Championship of the Czech Republic in two weeks.
We saw a lot of interesting places and I will not make readers tired by listing them all. It was interesting, fascinating, unbelievable. Great, like everything in China. The last evening came. The last show. While standing in a queue to the live performance of "Impressions West Lake" the other invited journalists started talking with me. They were from Africa, Asia, Europe, South America... "Our country is also beautiful," I was invited by a colleague from Laos. "Have you ever been to Káthmándú?" a journalist from Nepal asked. "You have to see carnival in Rio," a Brazilian man was smiling. "Look how expanding our town is thanks to help from China," a TV reporter from Cambodia showed me a video. We were finding the same language, we were communicating and sharing our experience regardless of the skin colour or faith. The night show was spectacular. At the same time it made us think. For example about the hope that media will become an open platform for variedness of opinions and improvement of relations among the nations. I believe that Zhejiang Media Cooperation and Communication Forum with International Friendship Cities was one of such examples.
Thank you. I could be with you there.
