The 26th Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders Meeting was held in Port Moresby, capital of Papua New Guinea, on November 18, 2018. Chinese President Xi Jinping delivered a keynote speech “Harnessing Opportunities of Our Times to Jointly Pursue Prosperity in the Asia-Pacific” while attending the meeting.

Xi pointed out, “We have reached a crossroads of history, when we must have a keen appreciation of the trend of our world and take the pulse of the world economy. That is how we will be able to respond to the call of our time and chart our future course accordingly.”

He then put forward a four-pronged proposal: to advance economic integration in the region so as to build an open economy in the Asia-Pacific; to pursue innovation-driven growth and foster new growth drivers; to improve the connectivity network to promote inclusive and interconnected development; to forge a closer partnership and jointly meet common challenges.

The APEC economies have reached consensus on making great efforts in making sure the Asia-Pacific region continues to achieve inclusive economic growth and integrate so that all citizens enjoy a higher standard of living, said Papua New Guinea Prime Minister Peter ONeill at a press conference after the meeting.

The APEC Economic Leaders Meeting, as well as the APEC CEO Summit, was a success, he noted.
