Chinese Disabled Artists Wow Audience in New York

The China Disabled Peoples Performing Art Troupe conveyed to its audiences the importance of dignity, respect, and inclusiveness through its music and dance performances in New York on the evening of November 6.

The artists with disabilities gave performances of both traditional Chinese and Western styles at the Lincoln Center, including Chinese folk songs, Peking Opera, a bamboo flute solo, a string duet, Latin dance, and more.

Two dozen artists performed Thousand-Hand Bodhisattva dance at the end, when the atmosphere reached a climax.

Founded in 1987, the China Disabled Peoples Performing Art Troupe has visited more than 100 countries and regions. These artists have presented to people across the world the beauty of arts as well as the persevering light of human nature.

In her remarks, Maria Fernanda Espinosa Garces, president of the 73rd session of the UN General Assembly, said the artists are ambassadors of goodwill. She expressed appreciation for the disabled performers efforts to promote peace through arts.

Confucius Classroom Opens in Serbian High School

A Confucius classroom opened on November 1 in the Serbian city of Sremski Karlovci, on the occasion of the anniversary of the countrys oldest secondary school. A ceremony for the 227th anniversary of the establishment of the Gymnasium of Karlovci (Karlovci Grammar School) was held at Sremski Karlovci, a town some 60 km north of the capital Belgrade.

Among attendees were Mladen Sarcevic, the Serbian minister of education, science and technological development, president of Serbias autonomous province of Vojvodina Igor Mirovic, Yuan Jigang, with the Chinese embassy in Serbia, as well as current and former students and professors of the school.

“Thanks to the generous support of the Embassy of China and the Confucius Institute at the University of Novi Sad, today we opened and put in operation completely-equipped, modern schoolrooms for Chinese language learning,” said director of the school Radovan Kovacevic in his welcome speech.

According to Yuan, with the steady progress of pragmatic cooperation between China and Serbia, the use of Chinese is becoming more and more extensive, and Serbian students learning Chinese will have a broader space for development.

European, Chinese Artists Stage Concert at UN Geneva Headquarters

A concert titled “China Meets the West” was held on the evening of November 2 at the Palais des Nations, the headquarters of the United Nations in Geneva, attracting more than 1,000 diplomats, officials of international organizations, and local residents.

The concert was performed by some 60 artists from the China National Opera House, together with a few local European artists.

The 20 musical works performed during the concert included arias from famous operas, Chinese and Western piano and violin pieces, and famous folk songs from China, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Russia, the Czech Republic, and some other countries.

Yu Jianhua, the permanent representative of China to the UN Office at Geneva, said after the concert that Chinese and Western musicians have teamed up to perform Chinese and Western classics, reflecting the openness and inclusiveness of Chinese culture and the mutual understanding of civilizations.

Zhao Yuan, the general art director and conductor of the concert, said that in this concert, famous Chinese songs such as My Motherland and On the Field of Hope were warmly received by the audience, showing that culture is the best messenger, and music is the bridge between people of different nations.
