Zhentou Village in Sandu Town, Jiande, a county-level city in greater Hangzhou, celebrated the first Harvest Festival in the history of Peoples Republic of China. The annual festival, started in 2018, occurs on Autumnal Equinox, which fell on September 23 this year. On the day, Zhentou hosted a special celebration at the provincial level because the villages cultural center is the 10,000th since the village cultural center project started six years ago.
The first village cultural center in Zhejiang is at Tian Village in Banqiao Town, Linan, which is a county-level city west of Hangzhou. The center is now part of the villages everyday life. Villagers go there to read books and practice calligraphy.
The 700-square-meter center has a theater, a lecture room, a reading room, a function room, among other facilities. It is indeed a center for the village population. The village head Yu Yongrong is very proud of the center, which was unveiled on the festival. “We had nothing: no special industry, no special advantages and no special features. Now we have this cultural center as a village landmark. The center itself is a special story,” said the chief.
At present, Zhejiang has over one third of the population living in rural areas. In order to satisfy the spiritual needs and wants of the rural population, Zhejiang launched a province-wide village cultural center project in 2013. For the past six consecutive years, the project has stayed as a top priority on the provincial governments rural work agenda.
These centers are designed to build up village communities, carry on local traditions and value, preserve village history and culture, display traditional lifestyle, build closer bond among villagers, provide entertainment and recreation, consolidate cultural resources, and comprehensively enhance cultural reconstruction in rural areas across the province. These centers have been doing pretty well.
As of 2018, the province plans to add 3,000 village cultural centers in rural Zhejiang. Every village with a population of 500 or more will have a cultural center by 2022.
The celebration at the cultural center of Zhentou Village attracted performers from cultural centers across the province. Some performances were intangible cultural heritage pieces, restored through these cultural centers. Performers from two village cultural centers in Jiande and Anji sang village songs.
These village cultural centers have considerably promoted cultural activities in rural areas. Han Yan, a teacher with Zhejiang Business and Technical College, recently brought her daughter back to Zhentou for a home visit. They were deeply impressed with the new center. “The village looks nice everywhere. I will be happy to let my girl mix with children here. We feel happy very much,” said the teacher.
