About 10,000 representatives of all walks of life pay silent tribute at a national memorial ceremony to mark the 80th anniversary of the Nanjing Massacre, in Nanjing, east Chinas Jiangsu Province, on December 13.
Japanese troops occupied Nanjing on December 13, 1937 and embarked on more than 40 days of slaughter. Around 300,000 civilians and unarmed Chinese soldiers were brutally murdered, and over 20,000 women were raped.
In February 2014, the Standing Committee of the National Peoples Congress, Chinas top legislature, designated December 13 as National Memorial Day for Nanjing Massacre Victims.endprint
