I started doing1)watercolortravel2)sketchesthree years ago, in order to moveat aslowerpaceand create richer memories of the places I visited. And so I arrived in Mostar, a small city in southernBosnia and Herzegovina.

One bright Wednesday morning, I was sitting on a3)sidewalkdrawing the scene before me.Then a woman stopped and asked if I was a student. She had a4)bob, and introduced herself as “Dalila.” She asked where I was from, and when I told her I’d grown up in Virginia, she said, “You’re joking. You must come and have a coffee.”We chatted a bit more until Dalila had to return to work.

Four days later, Dalila’s daughter Alma and I made our way to the old part of town.Dalila had told me that they were both interested in art and had suggested the three of us sketch together. So we began sketching the city’s famous bridge.

As I sketched, I thought of passing this place the night before with Dalila, on our way to a central square.Dalila had talked of her family and of life after the war.“When I came back from Norway, the east side was likeHiroshima. They had no electricity or water. They were drinkingthe Neretva River. Before the war, Mostar was one of the most beautiful cities in Yugoslavia.”

“Now we are walking to the other side,” she said, “but I have never accepted that there are two sides to this city.I believe we are one.” Through the pages of my sketchbook, and the doors it had opened for me here, I now believed the same.

Until that moment, sketching had been a way of remembering places.Only in Mostar did it begin to create the very moments I hoped to remember.
