Picture Books – Childrens Companions

Maria Tatar, John L. Loeb Professor of Germanic Languages and Literature at Harvard University, believes that childrens bedtime stories originate in the fireside talks of early times, when family members would gather after a hard days work to relax, chat and gossip. Their talk would be of monsters lurking in the forest and how to avoid them, of innocence and temptation and of evil and compassion, as flickering flames all the while cast looming shadows. This light amid darkness is reflected in the cognitive impact on readers emotions of the contrast between fear and beauty, and is the best interpretation of fairytale magic.

Until the 18th century, fairytales, notable for their violence, horror and eroticism, were strictly adult entertainment. As J. R. R. Tolkien observed, fairy stories then became“like old furniture relegated from the living room to the nursery, because the adults no longer wanted it and so did not mind if it was misused.”

Industrialization in the 19th century wrought dramatic social changes, evoking extreme nostalgia that entailed recognition of the pricelessness of childhood and acknowledgement of this special stage in a persons life, its material culture and emotional needs. Inspired by the popular reverence for childlike innocence and unrestrained imagination, brilliant writers including Charles Dickens, Lewis Carroll, and J. M. Barrie began writing works for children whose protagonists were also children. This was the golden age of childrens literature.

Picture books came to the fore during this period. This brand new storytelling style led to artists such as Randolph Caldecott, Walter Crane, and Kate Greenaway becoming illustrators of popular fairytales and childrens rhymes. Randolph Caldecott was deemed father of the modern picture book.

As to parents, what is the role they are expected to play when interacting with their children through picture books?

Stanford Alumni, Chinese Entrepreneurs

Among the U.S.s most prestigious universities, Stanford is considered top as regards the emphasis it places on science and technology. In the 1970s, the school rented spare premises to alumni who had started up their own businesses. The renowned Silicon Valley was developed on the basis of Stanford Industrial Park.endprint

The school has seen a rise since the end of 1990s in the number of Chinese students, to whom everything about Stanford was new and inspiring. Upon entering the school, they readily accepted its philosophies and adapted to what was to them an unconventional academic circle.

Over the last two decades, Chinese alumni like Liang Jianzhang, Victor Koo, Guo Quji, Chen Ou, and Chen Yizhou have integrated the theories and skills they learned at school into their prospering businesses in China. Some of the companies these alumni established have been listed on the U.S. stock exchange.

Most of this generation of Stanford alumni underwent higher education in Chinas top universities before pursuing graduate studies in the U.S. Some were former company executives and government officials hoping to learn new ideas from this world leading school. They expect, with the experience gained from Stanford, to contribute to changing the world for the better, through innovated products and services.

The World from Another Perspective

In the late Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), Chinese people were advised to “open their eyes and see the world.” Nearly two centuries have since passed. It is now time for us to upgrade and enrich this concept.

The idea, aimed at a better understanding of the Western world and achieving self-reliance, was initiated at the time when China was under pressure from foreign invasions. After decades of isolation, there was a revival of the “open your eyes and see the world” concept in China, with the launch of reform and opening up. Yet an “unfavorable balance” of knowledge still prevails.

Social sciences are not politically neutral. Western countries dominance of the global power structure is bolstered by their economic and military strength as well as a knowledge system based on research carried out throughout the entire world. In a sense, if we learn only from these countries, we are actually adopting a vision formed in other eyes.

We must therefore cast off the notions fixed by Western countries. Forming perceptions according to Chinese values calls for observing with ones own eyes. Another – Chinese –perspective gives us the chance to know the real world, and also truly understand ourselves. The judgments of others have overly influenced our self-knowledge.

Observations on the world are often connected with the situation of the country making them. We had little choice in the past. But today, Chinese people and products are entering the global stage. Maintaining the countrys progress requires in-depth study of the world, and at the same time makes this possible.endprint

Chinas Transformations

China now has entered the“new normal.” The country is not only shifting gear from high-speed to medium-to-high speed growth, but also undergoing transformations of various facets, from politics to economy to peoples livelihood. The emphasis is on quality and benefiting the people.

In the Internet era, production modes, ways of socializing and lifestyles have witnessed dramatic changes. Social software, online shopping websites and banking are becoming essential features of our everyday life.

However, the pillar industries of Chinas real economy are accustomed to conventional methods, and have yet to adapt to the Internet era. They are moreover faced with declining business, shrinking markets, product backlogs, and many other difficulties. Some companies are at a loss as to how to adapt to this new era, and wonder whether or not the real economy has indeed been marginalized or even overturned.

The time, the environment– everything is changing. This means that companies must abandon old development modes and integrate into this radically changing world. The emphasis is now on innovation rather than manufacturing, quality rather than speed, and brand building rather than simply churning out products. Technology, quality and service, and innovation are hence the decisive factors.

Registration System Forces Administration Upgrade

Promoting a stock issuance registration system carries top priority in reforms to Chinas capital market in 2015. It is a fundamental project that involves major market participants. What opportunities and risks accompany this revolutionary change, and in what way will it influence the internal and external management of listed companies? These questions draw growing attention.

Securities issuance is a fundamental feature of capital market operation, and an important platform for investment and financing.

Chinas stock issuance system, developed from administrative-led examinations to market-oriented approvals, has greatly supported the countrys economic development by facilitating the listing of a good number of state-owned enterprises and private companies, and by providing varieties of investment products for investors. Reforms of the stock issuance system that have been carried out for several years aim at enhancement of the markets capacity for self-discipline through stipulating information disclosure obligations and reducing administrative interventions – all of which conform to the laws of capital market development. Promoting a stock issuance registration system is expected to deepen capital market reforms and encourage regulators to streamline administration, delegate power to lower levels, and transform their functions. It will also solve existing problems in the current system and promote healthy development of the domestic capital market while better serving the real economy.

Decades of development and recent reforms in Chinas capital market have laid the foundations for bringing the stock issuance registration system into effect. As China is amid transformations of its administrative style and changing its ideas of market regulations, the time is now ripe to launch it.endprint
