“The Technology for Production of Bio-jet Fuel via Hydrogenation”Passed Technical Appraisal of Sinopec Corporation

On November 27, 2014 the research project “Technology for production of bio-jet fuel via hydrogenation”, which was jointly implemented by the Sinopec’s RIPP, the Sinopec’s Zhenhai Refining & Chemical Branch Company, the Hangzhou Petrochemical Company, Ltd., SEI, and the Economics & Development Research Institute (EDRI) of SINOPEC Group, had passed the technical appraisal organized by the Sinopec Science & Technical Division.

The technology for production of bio-jet fuel via hydrogenation (the SRJET technology) uses palm oil, coconut oil, microalgae oil and restaurant waste oil as the starting materials to manufacture the blending component of the bio-jet fuel meeting the ASTM D7566 standard. The

result for evaluation of fuel quality has revealed that the blending component of the bio-jet fuel in admixture with the petroleum-based jet fuel at a 50:50 ratio can comply with the quality requirements for the jet fuel No. 3. Furthermore, this SRJET technology has good adaptability to different vegetable oils to meet the demand of commercial test units.

The outcome of commercial tests of the SRJET technology in a 20 kt/a unit for hydrogenation of bio-jet fuel has shown that the mass yield of a 150—290 ℃ jet fuel fraction obtained from palm oil reaches 34.5%, while that obtained from the restaurant waste oil can reach 42.4%. The bio-jet fuel blending component meets the requirements of the ASTM D7566 standard.
